Round 4 of the Mark Mason Financial Colligan Spring League took place last Wednesday evening in the beautiful surround of Colligan wood on what was once again a perfect evening for running.  The league this coming Wednesday evening will be the 5th and final round. To be included in the tables you need to run 4 out of the 5 nights. As this is the last night of the league please note that the league prizes will be awarded and presented by our sponsor Mark Mason straight after the league finish. With the league coming to an end Wednesday we might encourage those who participated maybe for the first time in some cases to enter Friday evenings Ballinroad 5k, a flatter better course is hard to find and now that you have managed to completed the Colligan league the 5k won’t be a bother to you. A total of 27 runners completed the 2 laps, We had 18 who ran the 3 laps flat course and finally 46 took on the challenging 5 mile hill route – this gave us a great crowd of 91 runners on the night. The final round will get underway at 6.30pm this Wednesday.

It was a case of as you were over the 2 laps last week as 27 runners ran this course the same as the previous week and all were lead home once again by Sean Kearney in 20.59 a big PB as the previous week he clocked 22.06 on the same course.Avril Doocey was our first lady and she lead home all the next 8 finishers which happen to be all ladies, Avril ran a time of 23.48 with Michaela Moran 3rd in 24.02 only 7 seconds ahead of Claire O’Sullivan 24.09 with Sinead Kiely next 25.21 and clocking the same time 25.28 were Sinead Hehir and Margaret Cleary.Well done to everyone who completed the 2 lap league again this week and keep up your efforts for the final week where we expect to see more personal best times as everyone goes for broke on the final night.

Last week on the 3 lap mile flat route we had another healthy number 18 participants again here the Ladies slightly outnumbered the men with 11 Ladies and 6 men participating. Running the league for the first time this year was Tomás Mahony and he clipped around the course in a fast 31.13 the fastest time recorded on this circuit after 4 weeks of league running. Next past the finish post was Paul Murray in a time of 32.07 and the first Lady finisher last week in 3rd place was Frieda Mc Grath 32.44, 4th finisher was Sinead Ni Fhaoláin just over the 34 minute marker 34.02. The next 3 finishers were all within 2 seconds of each other Rachel Wyley 34.14  Fiona Ormonde 34.15 and Karen Ryan 34.16.so well done to all the runners of our 3 lap flat course runners.

Times are are coming down over the 5 mile hill course with 46 running the course last week and it’s great to see how many are clipping great chunks of time off their weekly effort, and no more than David Nixon who once again last week lead the field home in his fastest time to date 34.28 having almost a minute over our 2nd finisher James Coade 35.23 who himself is greatly improving as the weeks slide by.Martin Lavin running the hills for the first time in the league finished 3rd in 35.43 with Mark Walsh next in 36.55.Jamck Nolan broke the 38 minutes last week running as time of 37.47 just 10 seconds ahead of Michael Dunford 37.57, our first Lady home last week in 11th place was Diane Behan 39.20.Well done to all who conquered the hills last week, and again please note this week’s league is the final round so the presentation of league prizes will take place immediately after the  last finisher ins home, so it would be an idea to bring a top change with you.

As always we are indebted to our steward’s and finish line helpers. Ray, Shirley and Declan. Thanks to our sponsor Mark Mason. Thanks to stewards Liam, Gerry and Jamie who also puts out the signs and cones ever week. The Kilkenny race walking grand prix was held at the famed Pink Rock ( under the Rose Kennedy bridge New Ross) and hosted by St Joseph’s AC  last Sunday. A brilliant organised event which saw 90 walkers young and old participating from under 10 right up to Masters and every age category between, covering distances from 500 meters to 20 kms, West Waterford AC had its largest turnout of walkers ever participating in a single event and many came home with podium placing’s and personal best performances among our 7 walkers competing over a variety of distances. Starting with the under 10’s who covered 500 meters our youngest walker Tiarnach Costin finished 3rd in a time of 3.33 a great start for a young man whose parents are both Olympians. Moving onto the under 12’s where one of 3 sisters racing on the day finished 1st from the 11 starters over 1 km Aisling Hickey in a time of 6.04 was top of the podium here. In the under 16 age over 3kms and one of the performances of the day belonged to Sophie Beresford who had a huge PB of 15.36 to take 2nd place with her team mate Eabha Hickey finishing 10th in 19.36. Eabha’s sister Doireann was racing over 5k in the under 20 race finishing 3rd in a time of 29.23.One of the clubs newest members John Laste raced very well in the Masters 5k event finishing 2nd in a time of 30.18 wearing his new club colours very well on the day. And finally over the 20km distance Kate Veale had a one minute PB over the distance when she clocked 1.36.30 which was just a minute outside the qualifying mark for the European championships to be held in Rome later in the summer.
