To all involved in helping with the organisation of the race in both Villierstown and Cappoquin a big thank you, to the O’Brien family for the water station out on the course,to our crew who looked after the traffic management Conor, Jamie and John they did a brilliant job. To our team of time keepers, entries and results administrators van helpers. To Cappoquin hall committee for affording us the use of their premises for teas and presentation this was much appreciated. At the prize presentation in the hall our chairman Tom Leahy asked all present to observe  a moment reflection for two of our fellow runners who sadly passed to their eternal reward during races the previous week both at a young age. Finally our thanks this year again to our local race co-ordinator of the event Trevor Mason for all their work behind the scenes. See you all for the 32nd.

EVAN FITZGERALD RUNS 2ND FASTEST TIME EVER TO CLINCH THE MICHAEL C.NAGLE MEMORIAL TROPHY.

After a day which saw lots of dark skies and heavy showers we were more than grateful; for the hours reprieve during last Friday evenings 31st annual Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 mile road race. The race got under way at exactly 7.30 from Villierstown and from the sound of the starters whistle Evan Fitzgerald West Waterford AC was gone and dusted as far as the race winner this year was concerned, by the time the race had reached the top of the village and through the Dromana gates Evan had a lead of 150 meters on the field and from this hard out effort it looked like the course record of one John Treacy 23.49 set in 1999 was on his mind, going through the first mile in 4.41 it looked likely he was going to give it a right go. As the race made it way  over the beautifully famous Dromana drive and under the gothic arch Evan was well clear and still just about on target for the record ,however it wasn’t going to be broken that easily and Eva despite his valiant effort just came up short after a huge solo effort crossing the fish in line in Cappoquin as the clock stopped at 24.16, but what a gallant effort and just 28 seconds short but he can take great pride in running the 2nd fastest time ever on this course in its 31 year history of the race.Incidentally Evan finished 2nd in this race last year with a time of 25.55 so how’s about that for improvement in a year.Sergui Ciobanu Clonliffe Harriers AC last year’s winner finished 2nd this year in a time of 25.24,Evan and Sergui have shared the top spot in this race over the past 4 editions of it with both winning twice and finishing 2nd twice .Pat Fitzgerald Waterford AC was well clear in 3rd place with a time of 26.05, Pat finished also in 3rd place last year when he ran a time of 26.24 so a nice time improvement for the city man in this year’s race, and 4th man home was Aidan Connell West Waterford AC 26.52 and just like Pat ,Aidan also filled this 4th position in last year’s race when he ran a time of 27.01,so again a very good time improvement for the Villierstown man .Another of our city friend Conor Kavanagh Waterford AC took 5th place in a time of 27.14.A great battle between club teams was fought out in a sporting manner for the team prize categories as West Waterford A team took the honours the team consisted of Raivis Zakis,Gearoid Coffey and John Coffey scoring 26 points and West Waterford b team took 2nd place Conor Hennebry Alan Ryan and Mark Flynn on 39 ponits. Well done to all runners and winner.

KATE VEALE WINS MASON FAMILY CUP.

From the field of 193 athletes who took part last Friday evening the Ladies race was keenly contested and the one who came out on top this year was well known Irish race walker Kate Veale West Waterford AC who completed the course in a time of 31.52. Kate is in off season mode currently from race walking and always loves to run her club races and other local races when she can do so ,It’s great to see her support her club this way by taking part in as many of our events as she can, so the name on the Mason Family cup for 2025 will be Kate Veale. Our 2nd lady home was Clotilde Fitzgibbon Grange Fermoy AC in a time of 32.54, Clotilde finished 5th in this race last year when she ran a time of 33.18 so she can be more than please with her run and time last Friday evening.Grange are always great supporters of our races especially the John Treacy each year when they have large numbers of athletes taking part. Our 3rd Lady home and one of our clubs most improved and improving female athletes on the road racing scene presently Angela Tobin with a time of 33.19,Angela is putting in great work in training and this is paying dividends for her and she also moved up a place having finished 4th in the race 12 months ago, and yet another of our Ladies filled that 4th place in Natalie Sheehan when she ran a time of 33.43,always a very consistent athlete Natalie hardly ever is outside a podium position in all the race’s that she runs. Our 5th place finisher in the individual prizes was Patricia Ryan Dundrum AC 34.32,good running from the Tipperary woman who was well under the 35 minute barrier. In the team award’s the host club West Waterford AC just like the men’s team award’s won both   1st team prize with Eveleen Drohan, Sandra Flynn and Linda Foley  Total Points 22 and  West Waterford A.C b team of  Anne Moore  ,Madeleine Hearne and Ciara Barry with a Total of 33 points took 2nd team.
