123.IE MUNSTER ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

WEST WATERFORD ATHLETES SECURE MEDALS.

The 123.ie Munster road championships 2024 were held last Sunday in Dundrum Co.Tipperary and hosted by Dundrum AC. The course was  a very fast course and fast times were recorded by many of the large fields who were representing their clubs from throughout the province. For the first time in many years West Waterford AC had both Ladies and Men’s teams competing in all categories. It turned out to be a memorable day for the club. First up was the women race combined with the men’s O65 4 mile race and the sun was shining down on the crowd of over 100. Everyone had a great run with 10 West Waterford Ladies crossing the finish line. As mentioned it’s many days since we that number finish a Munster championship road race. The Masters women scooped up individual medals with Niamh O’Donovan taking individual bronze in the F35 category and Eveleen Drohan picking up individual Silver in the F45 category. West Waterford athletic club were 2nd team in F35 category and had all the scoring members on the 3rd place F35 Waterford County team. The ladies team members who ran today were Evaleen Drohan, Niamh O’Donovan, Gráinne Moore, Elaine Langley, Angela Tobin, Linda Foley, Tara Ní Reachtagáin, Madeline Hearn, Sinéad Ní Fhaolain and Ornaith Keane. Well done to Grainne Moore on her first Senior Championship race. Joe Gough continued his spell of good form crossing the line first and taking the gold in the M70 category. The second race was the men’s Senior and Novice 4 mile with a field of 120 runners. West Waterford men’s team was lead home by Damien Murphy who made the trip from his base in Zurich to run for his club, followed closely by Marc Flavin with Conor Hennebry and Dermot Gough putting in strong performances on the day. Well done to Patrick Bergin also making his Championship debut for the club. As a club it’s of the utmost importance that we compete in these types of club competitions and last Sunday proved that we can not alone compete at this level but also be successful so very well done to each and every one of ye who wore the club singlet in Dundrum and well done to those behind the scenes who helped organise the club teams and to Padraig and Tara and Kellie who looked after the race numbers etc at the venue on the day.

MARK MASON FINANCIAL SERVICES COLLIGAN LEAGUE.

The club’s next big local event is the 5 week Mark Mason’s Financial Services Colligan running league for beginners and regular runners and all are welcome once they are over 16 years of age. We would especially encourage newcomers to come along and join in this league in Colligan wood. For the complete beginner there is the option of doing two laps of the wood, beginning at the wooden bridge and finishing at the wooden bridge. This is 4.4 km in distance or 2.7 miles so it might suit all those that ran the short route over the winter league plus this route is more or less completely on the flat. Another option is to take part in the 3 lap which is 6.5 kms or just over 4 miles; this is 3 laps of the same flat circuit of the wood mentioned above. The final option is the 5 mile hill route which is one lap of the wood for starters and then up the first hill and down the hill and then across the road for the second hill and finishing in by the wood at the bridge. Entry will be online in due course. The league will start on Wednesday April 3rd  and continue for five Wednesday evenings April 3rd,10th,17th, 24th and May 1st.Mass start each evening at 6.30 pm.

FORMAT OF THE LEAGUE.

Over the course of the 5 weeks of the league we will keep a record of each person’s finishing position. If you finish first you get one point, fifth place will earn you 5 points and so on. All runners will be put in to divisions of 5 and after the five weeks the winner of each division will receive a prize. Prizes will be awarded to those in each route and the divisions make it fun and interesting and all the more enjoyable.
