As you are aware we cancelled one of the rounds as a mark of respect to the Mason family on their bereavement so we will add a Wednesday night on to keep the league to 5 rounds. With round 3 looming next Wednesday we need to remind participants that you need to complete 4 of the 5 rounds of the league to figure among the tables come the final round.  Huge congratulations to club member Zuzana Costin who successfully passed referee exams for the highest international level (World Athletics – Referee Gold Level) in race walking. World Athletics (WA) just sent the certificate to Zuzana and The WA Referee Gold Level Certificate is valid for eight years and will expire on the 31st. December 2031 Zuzana will also act as a referee at the August Olympics in Paris as a “recorder”. Her task here is to collect red cards that the referees will give to walkers for violation of style, inform the supervisor and his assistants when it is necessary to send a racer to the so-called ‘penalty zone’ or disqualify him. The so-called “recorder” also summarizes reminders and red cards in the referee summary record and constantly checks the light board with red cards. At the end of the race, she gives the main referee information about disqualifications, stays in the ‘penalty zone’, or about adding penalties to the result time. Zuzana Costin will act in the “recorder” position on this Sunday at the Walking World Cup in Antalya, Turkey and in this position she also worked at the World Cup 2023 in Budapest, World Cup 2002 of walking teams in Muscat, Oman. Very well done to Zuzana on a super achievement to reach the top level on the world stage of administration in the sport.

At the world cup of race walking held in Antalya Turkey last Sunday West Waterford’s Kate Veale was in action representing Ireland along with Brendan Boyce Finn Valley AC in the marathon distance relay race walking event. With the top 22 teams automatically into the Paris Olympics in this new race walking discipline, the Irish team had a great opportunity to be among the teams in Paris, with 4x 10 to be covered the marathon distance the event starts with the male doing the first 10km before handing over the female ,unfortunately the 3 time Olympian Boyce strain his his hamstring at the 5 km mark and had to withdraw, so Kate never got to race at all, so that’s the ups and down of sport, and a hard look story if ever there was one.
