9TH ANNUAL AHS TUNING IRELAND BALLINROAD 5K THIS FRIDAY EVENING.
Our first race in the clubs summer road race programme for 2024 will get underway with the AHS Tuning Ireland sponsored Ballinroad 5k on this Friday May 10th at 7.30 pm.Firstly our sincere thanks to John Coleman of AHS for his continued sponsorship of this race which he has sponsored for the past 9 years. John operates a very successful car tuning company from his premises out on Coolagh road., Abbeyside. This year once again we are delighted to be able to help and support the local community in Ballinroad as the local soccer club Ballinroad A.F.C. will be the benefactors of the race, with monies donated towards the club’s underage teams. The race will incorporate a fun run/walk with proceeds from them going towards the clubs fund . Starting at 7.30 pm with Ballinroad Soccer club as the race H. Q. A huge turnout is expected if previous year’s is anything to go by as we deem the race to be the fastest flattest 5k course around. As you know in West Waterford AC we like to cater for all and have different prize structures in all our races, for the Ballinroad race we will have prizes for the top 5 men and women with lots and lots of spots for down the field finishers. Through the generosity of our sponsor we will this year be offering a cash performance bonus for both men and women,100 euro is an the added offer to the first Male to break 14.50 and the same to the first Female to who can break 17.00. The entry fee is 10 euro pre entry online. (15 euro on race night). The course chosen for the race is an excellent out and back course which is very flat so if it’s your first attempt at the 5k distance or you’re looking for a fast time on a flat- fast course this is your opportunity to shine. CELEBRATING OUR 30TH YEAR OF SUMMER RACING.
We are delighted to announce our Summer Schedule of races 2024 starting this Friday with the Ballinroad over the very popular 5k distance and finishing in Ballinameela on the 19th July in another very popular 5k route .As it is our 30th year we are celebrating in style where all participants can take home our very nice running singlet specially designed denoting our 30th year, A once off very nice piece of running apparel which will become a collector’s item in years to come. This is a unique opportunity to enter all 6 races in advance and just turn up on the night to each race and run! So get your entries in quickly and be ready for a super summer of racing once more. We are all looking forward to getting our summer programme underway and we hope to see all the old familiar faces and many new ones in the coming months. You can now enter all 6 races 60 Euro which is brilliant value or you can enter 5 of the races individually for 10 euro per race online. Individual race entries will open two weeks before each race. WEEK 4 COMPLETE AT MASON MORTGAGES AND FINANCIAL SERVICES COLLIGAN SPRING RUNNING LEAGUE.
Round 4 of the Mark Mason Financial Colligan Spring League took place last Wednesday evening in the beautiful surround of Colligan wood on what was once again a perfect evening for running. The league this coming Wednesday evening will be the 5th and final round. To be included in the tables you need to run 4 out of the 5 nights. As this is the last night of the league please note that the league prizes will be awarded and presented by our sponsor Mark Mason straight after the league finish. With the league coming to an end Wednesday we might encourage those who participated maybe for the first time in some cases to enter Friday evenings Ballinroad 5k, a flatter better course is hard to find and now that you have managed to completed the Colligan league the 5k won’t be a bother to you. A total of 27 runners completed the 2 laps, We had 18 who ran the 3 laps flat course and finally 46 took on the challenging 5 mile hill route – this gave us a great crowd of 91 runners on the night. The final round will get underway at 6.30pm this Wednesday.

It was a case of as you were over the 2 laps last week as 27 runners ran this course the same as the previous week and all were lead home once again by Sean Kearney in 20.59 a big PB as the previous week he clocked 22.06 on the same course.Avril Doocey was our first lady and she lead home all the next 8 finishers which happen to be all ladies, Avril ran a time of 23.48 with Michaela Moran 3rd in 24.02 only 7 seconds ahead of Claire O’Sullivan 24.09 with Sinead Kiely next 25.21 and clocking the same time 25.28 were Sinead Hehir and Margaret Cleary.Well done to everyone who completed the 2 lap league again this week and keep up your efforts for the final week where we expect to see more personal best times as everyone goes for broke on the final night.
FAST TIME BY RECORDED BY TOMAS MAHONY ON 3 LAPS.
Last week on the 3 lap mile flat route we had another healthy number 18 participants again here the Ladies slightly outnumbered the men with 11 Ladies and 6 men participating. Running the league for the first time this year was Tomás Mahony and he clipped around the course in a fast 31.13 the fastest time recorded on this circuit after 4 weeks of league running. Next past the finish post was Paul Murray in a time of 32.07 and the first Lady finisher last week in 3rd place was Frieda Mc Grath 32.44, 4th finisher was Sinead Ni Fhaoláin just over the 34 minute marker 34.02. The next 3 finishers were all within 2 seconds of each other Rachel Wyley 34.14 Fiona Ormonde 34.15 and Karen Ryan 34.16.so well done to all the runners of our 3 lap flat course runners.
GREAT IMPROVEMENTS ON THE 5 MILE HILLS.
Times are are coming down over the 5 mile hill course with 46 running the course last week and it’s great to see how many are clipping great chunks of time off their weekly effort, and no more than David Nixon who once again last week lead the field home in his fastest time to date 34.28 having almost a minute over our 2nd finisher James Coade 35.23 who himself is greatly improving as the weeks slide by.Martin Lavin running the hills for the first time in the league finished 3rd in 35.43 with Mark Walsh next in 36.55.Jamck Nolan broke the 38 minutes last week running as time of 37.47 just 10 seconds ahead of Michael Dunford 37.57, our first Lady home last week in 11th place was Diane Behan 39.20.Well done to all who conquered the hills last week, and again please note this week’s league is the final round so the presentation of league prizes will take place immediately after the last finisher ins home, so it would be an idea to bring a top change with you.

MIDLETON 5.
The annual Midleton 5 mile road race was held last Thursday and a field of 344 competed. The overall winner was Michael Harty, East Cork AC (25:30) and first Lady home was the inform Kealey Tideswell, Clonmel AC who finished 14th overall with a time of 28:48. Club member Onra Power ran a time of 42.08 and Martina Beechinor also ran completing the course in a time of 44.11.
RECORD FOR JOE IN DUNDRUM 5K.
Well done to our members who made the trip to Dundrum AC this evening to race in the BK 5 k road race which saw 250 compete. The overall race winner was Daniel Ryan Ellis Nenagh Olympic AC with a time of 15.28 and the ladies winner was Dymphna Ryan of the host club Dundrum AC in a time of 17.04 finishing 12 th overall. West Waterford AC club member Joe Gough was in action finishing 56th and breaking the 5k National M70 record in a time of 19.24 .The old standard was 19.36, very well done on yet another national al record. Cathal Reynolds ran a time of 17.47 for 22nd place and racing for the first time in our club colours after his recent transfer was John Laste who is very well known in racewalking circles and one of the country’s top masters in the sport John recoded a time of 26.28.
Deadmans 5k.
The annual Dead,mans 5k was held Friday evening, race number 2 of the Carrick On Suir AC an sponsored by Outfield sports a field of 78 completed on the night.Overall race winner was Pat Fitzgerald Waterford AC 16.21 and first Female was Kealey Tideswell Clonmel AC in a time of 17.41 and finishing 3rd overall, West Waterford athletes were among the prize winners also with a great run by Grainne Moore in the ladies race where she took 2nd place in 13th place overall with a time of 19.40 others to make the podium were in the M45 Tom Hogan was 1st with a time of 20.33 and in the M60 Ray Hahessy also took first place in 19.31Very well done to our club prize winners and to all who supported the race.
The final race is of course Portlaw 5 mile in 4 weeks’ time, Friday May 31st. Put the date in your diary and we’ll see you all soon!

20KM PERSONAL BEST FOR KATE VEALE AT PINK ROCK RACE WALKING GRAND PRIX.
SOPHIE BERESFORD EXCELS OVER 5K.
The Kilkenny race walking grand prix was held at the famed Pink Rock ( under the Rose Kennedy bridge New Ross) and hosted by St Joseph’s AC last Sunday. A brilliant organised event which saw 90 walkers young and old participating from under 10 right up to Masters and every age category between, covering distances from 500 meters to 20 kms, West Waterford AC had its largest turnout of walkers ever participating in a single event and many came home with podium placing’s and personal best performances among our 7 walkers competing over a variety of distances. Starting with the under 10’s who covered 500 meters our youngest walker Tiarnach Costin finished 3rd in a time of 3.33 a great start for a young man whose parents are both Olympians. Moving onto the under 12’s where one of 3 sisters racing on the day finished 1st from the 11 starters over 1 km Aisling Hickey in a time of 6.04 was top of the podium here. In the under 16 age over 3kms and one of the performances of the day belonged to Sophie Beresford who had a huge PB of 15.36 to take 2nd place with her team mate Eabha Hickey finishing 10th in 19.36. Eabha’s sister Doireann was racing over 5k in the under 20 race finishing 3rd in a time of 29.23.One of the clubs newest members John Laste raced very well in the Masters 5k event finishing 2nd in a time of 30.18 wearing his new club colours very well on the day. And finally over the 20km distance Kate Veale had a one minute PB over the distance when she clocked 1.36.30 which was just a minute outside the qualifying mark for the European championships to be held in Rome later in the summer. All in all a brilliant days racing by all.
THE GREAT LIMERICK RUN.
The Regeneron Great Limerick Run was held last Sunday with big fields in all distances marathon-half and 10k.Well done to all club members who represented the club in the all 3 distances.
