Successful Day 1 at the County Championships

Despite the late change of date to the bank holiday weekend there were big numbers in attendance at the RSC for Day 1 of the county championships. Over thirty athletes from West Waterford competed across all disciplines.

First County Championships for under 9’s

We had just one under 9 girl competing and she took part in the sprint, long run and long jump. Well done Harriet. We had three boys which left us one short for a relay team. Richard Ahearn and Andy Zakis made it through to the final of the sprint and Tadhg Kinsella just missed out on a spot in the final.

Silver for Rian Flavin in the 500m

There were big numbers in the girls events and their turbo javelin was the last event to finish on the day. Both Sinead and Eadaoin competed well against strong opposition. Rian Flavin and Gerard Butler made it through to the final of the 60m and Rian, Gerard and Conan all competed in the 500m with Rian coming through strongly in the final 200m to take silver and Gerard and Conan not far behind.

First County Medal for Darcy Lavan

Darcy Lavan who was competing in her first county championship had a great throw in the turbo javelin to finish 3rd and win her first county medal. Leah Kiely made it through to the sprint final and finished 4th in the long jump just 3cms behind the bronze medal position. Our relay team of Leah Kiely, Isobel Daly, Darcy Lavin and Rachel Keogh finished 6th of the eleven teams competing. In the boys Colm O’Muiri and Jarleth Hurney competed with Jarlath despite being under the weather took silver in the sprint.

Good Day for Olan Devereaux

It was a very good championship for Olan Devereaux as he finished the day with a full set of medals, bronze in the long jump, silver in the turbo javelin and gold in the relay. Also competing under 12 were Cormac Hallahan and Mario Zakis.

Relay Gold for Under 13 Boys

The under 13 boys were the most successful group on the day with Fergus Donnolly 2nd and Peter Ahearn 3rd in the sprint and a silver medal for Lochlann Hurney in the Javelin. In the relay Mario Zakis and Olan Devereaux moved up to compete with Peter and Fergus and in our last event on the track made sure we finished on a high with a gold medal winning performance.

Gold for Noah and Silver for Oisin

Noah Commins had a good win in the boys under 15 1500 with clubmate Oisin Whelan taking the silver. Sarah Hallissey competed in the under 15 girls 1500 and Nevaeh Cairns was in action under 14.

Double Gold for Saoirse Quinn Bronze for Eoghan

Saoirse Quinn had a double in the hammer winning both the youths and junior hammer throwing well over 30m in the youths event. Eoghan O’Brien was back in action after a long layoff and took bronze in both the youths and junior discus.
