Good Turnout for Day 1 of the County Championships

West Waterford was well represented at day one of the county championships with almost fifty young athletes making the trip to the RSC to compete. We had a mixture of newcomers and more seasoned athletes and there were lots of good performances on the day in running jumping and throwing. The weather was kind to us and we had a bright sunny day as the competitions got underway. There was a big turnout from all the clubs in the county and competition was keen with big numbers in the younger age groups.

Gold for Ellie Mai, Jarlath, Darren, Aaron and Michelina and the under 13 Boys Relay

In the boys under 12 80m Jarlath Hurney was first across the line to claim the gold medal and followed it up later with a gold in the long jump and in the under 13 relay. Darren Doherty took to the track for the first time this year and put in a great performance to win the 100m under 14 and later he was third in the discus.

Ellie Mai Doherty surprised herself with a big throw to take gold in the under 12 turbo javelin and she was also third in the 600m.  Aaron Daus is a newcomer to the club and competing in his first track meet won the boys under 13 javelin and was also on the under 13 relay team that won gold. Michalina Goclik added a win in the under 15 shot to her win in the schools competition earlier in the week. Kevin Russell and Mario Zakis also won gold in the relay  under 13 to add to the silver and bronze medals they won in the 600m.

Silver for Fergus, Peter, Kasey and Finlidh

Others to finish second in their events on the day were Fergus Donnolly in the under 14 sprint, Peter Aherne in the under 14 discus and Kasey Connors in the 250m hurdles. Kasey was also 3rd in the under 15 sprint and was  on the girls under 15 relay that finished third. Peter was competing in the discus for the first time and was not far off the twenty metre mark and Kasey was also competing with the club for the first time. Another newcomer Finlidh O’h Ullachain was second in the boys under 11 long jump and put in a great finish in the relay in a bid to catch the 3rd placed team.

First County Medals for Eabha, Ruby and Liam

Eabha Broderick won her first county medal finishing 3rd in the 600m under 13 as did Liam Wilmott who finished 3rd in the boys under 11. Ava Kiely Kiely was on the podium in the 80m under 14 when she finished 3rd , her sister Leah also won bronze in the under 12 Long jump where only 3cms separated the top three athletes. Ruby Stockwel was competing in her first county championships and won bronze in the triple jump and Ruby, Ava Kiely, Luisne de Paor and Kasey Connors combined to take bronze in our final event on the day the under 15 relay.

There were also good performances from Shay Doherty, Andy Zakis, Tiernan Hogan and Madison Connors who all made the finals of their sprint events.  Etain Ní Mhurchadha, Andy Zakis, Jamie Kiely and Aaron Daus all ran well in the 600 and all finished in 4th place. Special mention for David Kiely who was knocked to the ground in the big field in the boys under 10 500m but got back on his feet and chased after the group to get back up to 5th place.

Well done to all our athletes and parents who travelled to the RSC for last Sunday’s event. Day 2 of the county championships will be on Sunday May 12 in the RSC.
