COUNTY NOVICE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

 

SILVER FOR WEST WATERFORD AC MENS TEAM.

 

Day 1 of the country cross country season was held last Sunday in Tramore and hosted by Tramore AC who did a fine job on a well laid out course. Held in ideal conditions the novice fields were very disappointing with no Novice Women competing and just 11 Novice men. The juvenile programme kicked off the day’s racing for even ages saw good success for the club (see juvenile notes).The club have a great tradition within the county of fielding cross country teams in all county races and our men did just that last Sunday with 6 athletes competing. Well done to all men’s team members who represented the club at the novice, it’s of utmost importance that our club compete at county championships level so well done to all who wore the club singlet Sunday. The Novice champions for 2025 is Aidan Burke Waterford AC followed by Paul Ogle Tramore AC silver and bronze went to Paul Flynn Tramore AC.Tramore took the gold team with 20 points . The West Waterford AC men team claimed silver 27 points with team members were Padraig Healy 5th,Alan Hogan 6th Mossie Keogh 8th Michael Dunford 9th Yev Chizhikov 10th and David McNally 11th .The Munster Novice Championships will take place on Sunday October 12th in Co. Clare followed by the Munster Senior championships on November 2nd in Co Tipperary.   The club will be represented at all of the above.

 

 

COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE JAMES HUGHES PERPETUAL CUP THIS SUNDAY.

 

The county Senior Cross Country championships 2025 is down for decision this Sunday September 28th starting with the uneven ages Juvenile’s under 09-11-13-17-19 followed by Junior and senior Ladies and men’s at 12 noon at St. Augustine’s College.(by kind permission). The overall winner will have his name inscribed on the James Hughes perpetual cup. The race itself will see the men cover 4 laps of the Friary grounds (8k) and the ladies will cover 2 laps 4k in total .All our athletes are eligible to run this senior event  so don’t be shy, entry fee is 5 Euro and individual and team county medals will be presented on the day. The club will be represented by both a ladies and a men’s team in both senior events, so please do let us know if your available to run. Please wear your club singlet as it’s a championships event.

 

 

ARE YOU READY FOR THE 31st ANNUAL FORDE’S DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE .

 

 

 

 The clubs winter league which now enters its 31st  year will begin in November.  This year the number collection night will take place on the Wednesday October 29th where you can register for this year’s league and we can answer any questions you may have and we will also explain the rules and regulations of the league as well as the two courses of the league .The first official night of the league will be the following week November 05th. For all those that won’t be able to make it to the sports centre on the first night of number collection, you may get your number on the following night. In fact, it’s possible to join the winter league at any stage throughout the course of the league. Winter league payment is  a once off payment, with club members paying 35 euro (this includes the 5 euro once off number payment) and for non-members you can pay a once off payment of 40 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge. This amount will cover you for the full duration of the league.

 

 

FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE POINTERS.

The Fordes Daybreak Winter League will once again take place from the Sports Centre, Quanns Dungarvan for 11 Wednesday nights commencing on Wed 05th November.  We will continue for 7 nights before Christmas bringing  us up to Wednesday 17th December.

 

After Christmas we will return on Wednesday the 7th January and continue for 4 nights with our final night on the 28th  January.

 

Number pick up will take place at the Sports Centre Dungarvan on Wednesday 29th October at 6.30pm or on first night of the league from 6.15pm.

 

We hope you will join us again for this annual event and if you haven’t been with us before we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.  It’s an 11 week challenge that can maintain your fitness over the winter and start 2026 on a high note.

 

As usual 2 options to choose from.  The first is the “long” route which is 5.2 miles while the second choice is the “short” route and the distance here is approx 2.3 miles.  Both routes start and finish at the Sports Centre, Quanns. 

 

No High Vis, No Run.  We will not allow any runner take part who doesn’t wear a high vis.  No exceptions.  It has to be a high vis not a luminous t-shirt.

No watches allowed or No Headphones.  This is a very strict rule of this event. We will publish your time asap after the run. Your aim each week will be to run the time you ran the week before or if possible a little faster.

Stewards must be obeyed at all times.  Your participation in this event is an indicator of your compliance with this rule.

Rules of the road apply. You must run on the footpath at all times when available and only cross the road at designated points where stewards will direct you.

 

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE LEAGUE INDICATES THAT YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE ABOVE RULES.

 

 

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON IS HERE.

 

The cross country season got off to a good start last Sunday when Tramore AC hosted the even ages Juvenile and the Novice men’s and women’s races. This coming Sunday 28th September we will host the uneven ages and Senior men and women championships starting at 11 am in St Augustine’s College.

MICK ON THE HILL OF HOWTH.

 

 

Well done to club member Mick Concannon who was once again on the marathon trail over the weekend when he had an early 7am start for Howth Hills 43 km race last Saturday morning. 4 tough loops on a wet morning. The event was organised by East of Ireland Marathons/ and Dublin Bay Running Club and was held as a fundraiser for a family room for the ICU stroke ward at Beaumont Hospital. Mick completed the run in a time of ran 4.22.

 

MICHEÁL POWERE RUNNER-UP IN RATHFARNHAM 5K.

 

Micheál Power and Sean Curran both returned to the roads last Sunday when they competed at the annual Rathfarnham 5km road race which had a big field of 1289 finishers running in ideal weather conditions. Micheál ran brilliantly to claim the runners up spot in a time of 14.00 dead.

Efrem Gidey Clonliffe Harriers AC won the race in 13.49 , Efrim who recently smashed the 10 mile course record at the Kikcok 10 miler proved just a little too strong for Micheál over the final few kms but none the less a brilliant performance by Micheál and great to see him back in such good form. 3rd place went to Jamie Battle Mullingar Harriers AC in 14.07 the Ladies winner was Cheryl Nolan St.Abbans in a time of 15.44.Sean Curran made the trip down south also from his work base in Donegal and Sean ran very well finishing in a time of 16.14.Well done to both Micheál and Sean.

 

RAIVIS 2ND IN VILLAGE RUN.

 

The Village Run named races was held today Sunday in Ballylinan, Co. Laois and the event had 4 races to choose from 5k,10, half marathon and ¾ marathon distances. The weather was idea for the days racing as club member Raivis Zakis made the journey up in preparation for his upcoming Dublin marathon tarket race.Raibvis ran the ¾ marathon distance and finished a creditable 3rd in a time of 1.56.58 with the win going to Sean Hehir Crogan AC in 1.51.28 and 2nd place was John O’Brien Watergrasshill AC 1.55.14. Well done Raivis.

 

THOMAS KENT 10K.

The St Nicholas AC organised Thomas Kent memorial 10K was held today Sunday in ideal weather conditions. The overall race winner was Thomas Browne In in a time of 34.26 and the Ladies winner was Linda Kelly Watergrasshill AC 38.50.The club had 3 athletes taking part with Jack Nolan leading them home in a time of 43.57 and he was followed home by Brian Walsh 47.51,next was Patricja Daly 58.02,very well done to all.

West Waterford Athletic club extend sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Rosemary Fennell Ballyvoile, Stradbally, who passed to her eternal reward, may she rest in peace..
