43rd ANNUAL DUBLIN MARATHON 2024.
The weather was perfect last Sunday for this year Irish Life Dublin marathon as 20.000 athletes took to the streets of the capital for the annual marathon pilgrimage.Kenya’s Moses Kemei won this years with Asmirach Nega of Ethiopia earning victory in the woman’s race.Kemei crossed the line in a personal best time of 2:08.46 with Ethiopia’s Abebaw Desalew second in 2:09.23.Hiko Tonosa DSD AC in a time of 2:09:42 finished third and won the national marathon title in a new Irish record time ( John Treacy did run 2:09:15 in Boston in 1988, although that doesn’t count for record purposes due to Boston’s net downhill gradient) Nega took the woman’s event in a recor Nega took the woman’s event in a record time of 2:24.13 with last year’s winner Sorome Negash second in 2:24:45 and Grete Dukale completed an Ethiopian one-two-three by finishing third in 2:28:29.Ann-Marie McGlynn Letterkenny AC ran 2:34.05 to win and retain the Irish women’s national title.The clubs first finisher this year was David Mc Crathy 2.24.17 the 3rd fastest time ever recorded by a West Waterford AC club athlete behind John Treacy and Tony Ryan, David was pacing the lead lady and complete the full course with her in a Ladies new course record 2.24.13.Aidan Connell and John Hodge shared the effort throughout the race with both crossing the line together in 2.50.17, Billy Ryan also broke the 3 hour mark clocking a time of 2.58.43.Jessica Sanderson was the clubs first Lady home in and excellent time of 3.33.25.

STEVE CURRAN RUNS FRANKFURT MARATHON.
While many club members were in Dublin last weekend for the annual marathon trip one of our members also ran a marathon but he opted for Frankfurt in Germany, well done to Steven Curran who ran a time of 3.41.50.
REYNOLDS COMPLETE VALENCIA HALF MARATHON.
A new half marathon world record was recorded this morning at the 33rd annual Valencia half marathon when Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia finishing in a remarkable 57:30 on a wet morning set the remarkable new standard. The club had two athletes competing at the event when father and son David and Cathal along with sister Ashling completed the course. Cathal ran an excellent time of 1.22.45 with Aisling well under the 2 hour barrier at 1.55.56 and dad David completing a the family trio in a time of 2.48.11,well done all.
MUNSTER CROSS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR TRAMORE.
The Munster uneven ages juvenile, under 23 and senior cross country championships will be held this coming Sunday and hosted by Tramore AC on behalf of the Waterford country athletics board.The days racing will get under way at 11.30 am. All club athletes eligible are asked to be at the venue on time. Please wear your club singlet as this is a championships race.

MURRAYS PHARMACY TO SPONSOR 29th ANNUAL BRICKEY 4 IN AID OF CARRIGLEA AND GLENBEG NATIONAL SCHOOLS ON SUNDAY MOVEMBER 24TH.
Bushy Park GAA grounds is the venue for the 29th annual Brickey Run. Again this year we are delighted to announce that once again as they have now done now for many years Murray’s Pharmacy Dungarvan are to continue on with their sponsorship of the race we sincerely thank Elizabeth and all at Murrays Pharmacy for this kind gesture. The proceeds from this year’s race will be donated to Carriglea and Glenbeg national schools in the area. The race distance will be over a very flat fast 5k loop around the Brickey valley starting and finishing at Bushy Park GAA grounds. The race will get under way at 11 am with registration online only numbers can be collected at the club house from 10.15 onwards . The Martin Curran Cup will be awarded to the first man on the day and the Jim Lyons memorial shield will be awarded to the first lady. The prize-giving will take place in the club house immediately after the race and refreshments will also be provided for all the runners. Online entries open now.
30TH ANNUAL FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE.
The Fordes Daybreak Winter League will once again take place from the Sports Centre, Quanns Dungarvan for 11 Wednesday nights commencing on Wed 13th November. We will continue for 6 nights before Christmas bringing us up to Wednesday 18th December.After Christmas we will return on THURSDAY the 2nd January ( following week revere back to Wednesday )and continue for 5 nights with our final night on the 29th January. Number pick up will take place at the Sports Centre Dungarvan on Wednesday 6th November at 6.30pm or on first night of the league from 6.15pm.We hope you will join us again for this annual event and if you haven’t been with us before we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. It’s an 11 week challenge that can maintain your fitness over the winter and start 2025 on a high note. As usual there are 2 options to choose from. The first is the “long” route which is 5.2 miles while the second choice is the “short” route and the distance here is approx 2.5 miles. Both routes start and finish at the Sports Centre, Quanns. There are a few very important rules and they are not optional.No High Vis, No Run. We will not allow any runner take part who doesn’t wear a high vis. No exceptions. It has to be a high vis not a luminous t-shirt .No watches allowed or No Headphones. This is a very strict rule of this event. We will publish your time asap after the run. Your aim each week will be to run the time you ran the week before or if possible a little faster. Stewards must be obeyed at all times. Your participation in this event is an indicator of your compliance with this rule. Rules of the road apply. You must run on the footpath at all times when available and only cross the road at designated points where stewards will direct you.

ONCE OFF ONLINE REGISTRATION PAYMENT.
The clubs winter league which now enters its 30th year will begin in a few weeks’ time. This year the number pickup night will take place on the Wednesday November 6th.The following week the league will begin officially on November 13th. On this particular night the 6th all those interested and have registered online for the winter league are asked to come along and collect their number. You will be issued with a number for a cost of €5. This number should be used every night that you run. We will have people on hand at the sports centre that will be available to answer any questions you may have and we will also explain the rules and regulations of the league as well as the two courses of the league .The first official night of the league will be the following week November 13th. For all those that won’t be able to make it to the sports centre on the number collection night you may still register online and get your number on the following Wednesday night. In fact, it’s possible to join the winter league at any stage throughout the course of the league. Last year we introduced the ability to pay in full for the league, a once off payment, which will save you money if you intend running the league each night. For club members you can pay 40 euro ( this includes the 5 euro once off number payment) and for non-members you can pay a once off payment of 45 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge. LEAGUE NUMBER COLLECTION WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 6TH FOR THE 30th ANNUAL “FORDE’S DAYBREAK” WINTER LEAGUE 6.30 pm.
On tonight Wednesday November 6th sees the league number collection take place for the 2024/25 30th Annual Forde’s Daybreak winter league which will be run over 11 weeks and organised by West Waterford athletic club. The event for those few who are not familiar with it caters for all types of runners and especially for those that have never ran before, we provide plenty of advice and encouragement so please don’t feel that you might be the only person trying it for the first time as guaranteed there will be many coming along again this year for the very first time just like you. There are 2 distances to choose from and they are commonly known as the long route 5.4 miles and the short route 2.3.miles. Come along on the night and register for whichever route you wish to do. We will be available to answer any questions you may have tonight or any other night. There is no official run on registration night, however many people do run the course but there will be no stewards on the course until round 1 which is the official start of the league. If you haven’t registered online to date you can come along and register on registration night, you can also do so the following week or any other night but we do urge as many as possible to come along and register in order to speed up proceedings for the following week. Your cooperation with this matter is much appreciated.
SAFETY ON THE ROADS.
The first rule of safety when running on the road is that all runners must wear their reflective bib at all times. Bibs can be bought at any sports shop or hardware shop. Under no circumstances will any runner be allowed to take part in the winter league without a reflective bib. If you have now yet purchased one please do so before the start of the league. Watches and I Pods or any music ear pieces are strictly against club rules and will not be allowed. Runners must obey the stewards at all times. They are there for our own safety and are not to be ignored. Please be wary of traffic at all times but especially when crossing the road or overtaking somebody.
