29th ANNUAL MURRAY’S CAREPLUS PHARMACY BRICKEY 5K.

The 29th Annual Murray’s Careplus Pharmacy sponsored Brickey 5K Run/Walk was held last Sunday in what turned out to be a very nice morning despite the heavy rainfall all day Saturday and the early morning rain which fell on Sunday we were blessed with a few fine hours for our race.The Brickey GAA grounds was the race HQ and a good turnout of 139 runners and the large turnout of walkers taking part all there to support the event which was encouraging to see with all proceeds going to this year’s recipients Carriglea and Glenbeg National schools in the area. Our sincere thanks to all concerned with the event as they had everything running like clockwork on the morning with special thanks to all at Brickey GAA club for the work behind the scenes on the race and the assistance by plenty of willing stewards whose help was invaluable on the morning.All great events need great sponsors and we have been fortunate again this year to have Murray’s Careplus Pharmacy Dungarvan on board, a huge thanks to the Murray family for the wonderful prizes presented. We would especially like to thank Liz Murray of Murrays Careplus Pharmacy who came along on the day to present the winning prizes and she presented Richie Halpin and Evelyn Pettit from the 2 local primary schools with the proceeds from the race. Thanks to Liam on van duty and Jamie who looked after signage etc and to Gerry who marked the course. At the prize presentation the club chairman Tom Leahy thanked all who came along to run and those who took part in the walk also he thanked all who helped with the race especially all the stewards and our own West Waterford AC crew who once again did an excellent job, Ann ,Tom,Ray and Declan had the results out in no time at all. Our thanks to PJ Curran who came along to present the Martin Curran memorial Cup to the men’s winner and to Colin Lyons and his granddaughter Izzy who presented the Jim Lyons memorial shield to our ladies winner. A special thank you go to the ladies who looked after the refreshments after the race, they saw that everyone were well looked after with tea coffee and lovely treats. Thanks to Gerry Tobin and all at the Brickey GAA grounds. Next race coming up will be the Turkey Trot on Sunday December 08th, get your online entry in ASAP. We hope to see you all back in the Valley again next year.

THE MARTIN CURRAN MEMORIAL CUP GOES TO EVAN FITZGERALD FOR 2ND YEAR IN A ROW .

After running a course record last Wednesday at our winter league West Waterford’s Evan Fitzgerald was off the mark again Sunday when he was the runaway winner of the Brickey 5k making it back to back wins having won this race last year also. Evan from the gun raced into a lead leaving the chasers in his wake his winning time of 15.20 was 9 seconds faster that his recorded winning time of 2023.Evan was presented with the famed Martin Curran perpetual cup for his 2nd time by P.J.Curran and behalf of the Curran family.Andrew Connick Ferrybank AC a former winner of this race finished 2nd in a time of 16.18 and in 3rd place last Sunday was Sean Curran West Waterford AC with a time of 16.38.This year we had thanks to our sponsor category prizes and here the over 40 went to Jonathon Dunne Tullamore Harriers AC 17.12 , over 45 Colin Coyne St.Abbans AC 16.57, Martin Kirwan Focas on fitness took the over 50 in 18.57 and Ray Hahesy West Waterford AC for the 2nd year in succession took the over 55 prize in 20.33 and Cionnaith Cottor IND took the Junior prize in 26.32.Well done to all.

LUCY HOLMES WINS THE JIM LYONS MEMORIAL SHIELD.

Having finished 4th in the All Ireland under 23 cross country championships the previous Sunday West Waterford’s Lucy Holmes turned her attentions to road racing last Sunday when she took on the 5k distance in the Brickey event, and proved she can be equally as impressive running an excellent time of 18.14 she won by 17 seconds from St Catherine’s Sarah Mulcahy 2nd in a time of 18.31 and winner of the race in 2022 and 2023 Kate Veale having to settle for 3rd place this year in a time of 19.06.The over 35 category winner was Angela Tobin West Waterford AC in a time of 21.03 .Over 40 went to Pauline Shanahan IND 25.58.The over 45 winner was Sharon Higgins in 27.36,Sharon won the over 40 category last Year. Sandra Moore West Waterford AC took the over 50 category in a time of 26.20 Sandra also won this age category last year and our Junior prizes was won by Sadhbh Cronin Middleton AC in 19.39.well done to all.

FORDE’S DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE.

The weather was cool but dry last week for round 2 of the Fordes Daybreak Winter league which saw another huge turnout with 416 participants in total running on the two courses. The numbers registering for the league increased again having missed round one the previous week we had another 24 new registrations for round 2n there’s plenty more room also for those not registered yet we would love to see you and remember we welcome everyone no matter what their running ability is so do remember to let your friends know that if they have any thoughts of giving the league a try that we have plenty room for them so encourage them to come along and give it a go, you can start any night you wish and run at whatever pace you feel able to run at. You have two distances to choose from, there’s the short route 2.5 miles or the longer 5.2 course. We will do nothing but support you in your efforts. By now, you will have an understanding of how the league works. Runners go off in groups according to their times from the previous week and the ultimate goal is to try and pass as many people as possible while at the same time not to have too many pass you out!! Thanks to all the runners for obeying the rules of the winter league. We are sure that you will appreciate that with the huge volume of runners at the sport’s centre and out on the roads that your co-operation is vital for the smooth running and the safety of the runners. The clock starts at 6.40 p.m sharp each night but for your first night aim to be there around 6.30 in order to get your number. registered yet for the league, come-on make that move. We will see you all Wednesday for round 3.

EVAN FITZGERALD RUNS A NEW RECORD ON LONG COURSE.

Round 2 of the 2024/25 Forde’s Daybreak winter league saw another large turnout of runners last Wednesday evening at Dungarvan Sports Centre when 277 took on the long course, The big news on last week’s long course at the winter league was the time ran by Evan Fitzgerald .Evan running the league for the very first time last Wednesday ran an unbelievable time of 27.04 to set a new course record, indeed he smashed the old time set by Sean Curran which was 28.08.A super run by the West Waterford AC club man to knock a whopping minute and 4 seconds off. The winter leue will continue for 9 more nights 4 before Christmas and 5 after Christmas with a 2 week break over the festive season. First home on the league last week was Evan and he was followed home by Gary Collins in a time of 39.27 and third back last week was Sean Keogh in 37.08.The leading ladies last week were Maura Seaward who was first home in a time of 49.26, Lisa Collins was 2nd lady finisher in 46.36, and Claire O’Connor was our 3rd lady back to the sport centre in a time of 43.49.Well done to everyone who took part and to anyone who hasn’t joined the league yet, why not come along any Wednesday night and join you’ll be glad you took the first step.

GEETING INTO THE WINTER LEAGUE GROVE ON SHORT COURSE.

It only took two weeks of winter league running and its clear to see already how the short course runners are getting into the grove as they say, with great time improvements by many from round one. As good a night as one could wish for at this time of year last Wednesday night saw yet another huge turnout of runners on the short course for round 2 of the Fordes Daybreak winter league .As we said there was a once again a massive number out for the second round last Wednesday when 139 took up the challenge with a good number of newcomers as well as those that ran the previous week. It was great to see so many new runners that were trying out the league for the very first time as well as many league regulars. This section of the league specifically has first timers and beginners in mind and is a manageable distance for most as it covers 2.3 miles in total. The handicap system kicked in after the mass start the previous week. So make sure to check your start time on facebook and or on the sheets posted on the wall at the sports centre when you arrive down next week. First back on the night was Sinead Hehir who ran round in an excellent 20.23. Next was Tomas Horgan in21,33 followed by the 2nd of our Lady finisher last week Carol Walsh in 22.10,Tina Crotty in 22.16 was next back and she was followed by Daniel Bray with a finishing time of 22.25.Well done to all who took part, and remember newcomers are always welcome. Just register online and come along to Dungarvan Sports centre on any Wednesday Night at 6.30 collect your number and off you go.

No Watches are allowed, anyone wearing a watch won’t be included in the results.
Hi Vis is compulsory for all runners. This is for your own safety and safety of our other runners as well as to assist the stewards.
Your winter league number, given at registration, is the number you have for all the league. It should be worn to the front, be clearly visible and secured with a pin in each corner to stop it flapping. Also a huge thank you to all of our stewards out on the course and to all our crew in the hall and at the finish line.

33rd ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 LAUNCHED.
ENTRIES OPEN MONDAY DECEMBER 2ND .

West Waterford athletic club are delighted to announce that entries for our 33rd annual 10 mile event The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 entry will open online only on eventmaster.ie on Monday December 2nd.The event now in its 33rd year has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year from humble beginnings 33 years ago. This year the organisers due to the demand for entries for the race will keep the entry number to 3,750 entries, this we hope will see all runners wishing to run the event in 2025 getting an entry to do so. Please note that this event usually sells out well before closing date so do get your entry in if you intend running on Sunday February 2nd 2025.The John Treacy Dungrvan 10 brings together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan as we all look forward to an even bigger and better event on Sunday February 2nd next. IRISH KIDNEY ASSOCIATION 2025 RACE BENEFACTORS.

West Waterford athletic club are delighted to announce our race benefactors for the 2025 John Tracy Dungarvan 10 mile road race WILL BE The Irish Kidney Association. Monies donated by the runners and the club will be donated to this very worthy national cause. We are delighted as the race organisers to have chosen The Irish Kidney Association as they are a charitable voluntary organisation founded in 1978. They are dedicated to meeting the needs of renal patients and their families and carers, living with and affected by end stage renal disease. The prime role of the Irish Kidney Association is to support patients and their families effected by end stage kidney disease and are either being treated by dialysis or have a working kidney transplant. By providing information on kidney diseases, associated medical scenarios and social benefits and entitlements, the IKA helps patients and families live as normal a life as possible, given the presence of the kidney related illness. We hope that once again you will be generous and support this worthy cause. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

WEST WATERFORD TRACK DEVELOPMENT FUND TO BENEFIT FROM 16th ANNUAL AN SEAN PHOBAL MEMORIAL TURKEY TROT.

On Sunday December 8th the 16th Annual Cleanzone Technologies Ltd sponsored Paddy Joe Curran Old Parish Turkey Trot 5 mile run and 4 mile walk will take place at the Marine Bar, Pulla, Dungarvan. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to the West Waterford Track Development Fund. The event is once again kindly sponsored by Cleanzone Technology Ltd of which were most grateful. The 4 mile walk will begin at 11 am, while the 5 mile run will get under way at 11.30. The Annual Paddy Joe Curran Memorial Old parish Turkey Trot was set up by the late Paddy Joe Curran in 2007. Unfortunately Paddy Joe passed away in 2011 . Paddy Joe dedicated his life to promoting athletics in the As Sean Phobal and An Rinn areas. After his passing a group of Paddy Joe’s friends came together with the aim of growing the event and raise funds for local charities in his memory. All proceeds from this year’s event go to West Waterford track development fund. Registration online for 10 euro or on the day its 15 euro number collection from 10:30am on the morning at the Marine Bar located on the N25. Prize giving and refreshments will take place at the Marine Bar following the event. Please note there will be no mass start for walk. Once walkers have registered and signed in, they will be allowed to begin the event. JOE WINS MUNSTER OVER 70 CROSS COUNTRY.

The Munster Juvenile relays and Masters cross country championships were last Sunday in Two Mile Borris Co.Tipperary. West Waterford’s Joe Gough was in action in the over 70 age category and he duly took the gold medal with Eamon McEvoy St. Finbarrs AC silver and Matt Alexander Coolquill AX taking the bronze. Well done Joe.

MICK RUNS STAINES MARATHON.
Mick Concannon ran the Thames Path Marathon in the U.K. last Sunday which was held in very high winds which made for very difficult running for the participants. Mick completed the course in a time of 4.27,well done Mick.
