28th ANNUAL DOOCEYS ORIEL BAR BALLYMACARBRY 5 MILE ROAD RACE.

The West Waterford athletic club road show was delighted to be back with our friends in the beautiful Ballymacarbry last Friday evening for the 28th year of unbroken sponsorship by Dooceys Bar in the village for the annual 5 mile road race .On behalf of the club we thank Tony and Michael and all the Doocey family for their on-going sponsorship of this race. The race itself this year saw a good field assembled with 198 running on the night which was a big increase from last year , The course as it is now for some years is an out and back one all on the road, The race leaves Ballymac and heads out the Nire road before turning at the 2.5 mile mark and returning the same road. By race start time at 7.30 pm it the pending showers were still holding off and it was quite a warm evening before the race got underway we had a word at the start line from one of the founding members of the first race committee Frank Bolger remembering the 30th year since the race began back in 1995, we thank Frank for his impute to this year race and indeed over the past 30 years. It was great to see the support from clubs around Munster this year and special thanks to Clonmel AC and also the training group J and N Coaching who had big numbers participating Friday evening. Thanks also to Lucy Ronayne who was on hand to present the winners with their prizes on the night on behalf of Doocey’s Bar.  EVAN FITZGERALD GOES THREE IN A ROW.

Having won this race the past 2 years was it possible he could do the triple and yes he did of course West Waterford AC’s Evan Fitzgerald completely dominate yet again the Ballymacarbry 5 miler when from gun to post as is his trade mark racing strategy at this stage he came home clear of the field in a time of 24.36, having won last year in 25.11 and in 2023 with a time of 24.59 last Friday proved to be his fastest of his 3 wins by quite a margin. Our 2nd man home was Dermot Gorman Carrick On Suir AC with another fine run clocking a time of 26.15, Dermot is a regular at our races and is regularly finishing in a podium position. Having finished 2nd last year in the race West Waterford’s Aidan Connell running a time of 27.18 had to be happy with 3rd place this year despite running within 2 seconds of his time for 2nd last year none the less another fine run by Aidan. The over 40 category was claimed by Paddy Cummins Moycarkey Coolquil AC with the over 45 category going to Raivis Zakis West Waterford AC. Raivis won the over 40 category in last year’s race so keeping his winning streak going having moved up an age category. Eugene O’Keeffe Carrick On Suir  A.C. won the over 50 section for the 2nd year in succession, Ray Hahessy West Waterford A.C  took the over 60 category and our first Junior man home was local Lad Cruz Peters .Well done to all.

41st  ANNUAL SHERRY FITZGERALD REYNOLDS DUNGARVAN 10K ON THIS FRIDAY.

As the headline suggest we have a new sponsor for our upcoming 10k race which is number 5 of 6 in the West Waterford AC summer programme of road races , the 41st annual Sherry Fitzgerald Reynolds  Dungarvan 10K will take place on this Friday evening July 4th at 7.30 pm. The event is the oldest race in the West Waterford calendar and this year we are delighted to announce a brand new sponsor in Sherry Fitzgerald Reynolds Dungarvan’s premier Estate Agents and Auctioneers. Before we go into more detail of this exciting partnership with the Reynolds family we must firstly thank the Ryan Family Alan, Caroline Aoidheen and Aimee of Déise College for the many years of support for this race we are most grateful to have had this sponsorship and we wish all the Ryan family who are club members our very best wishes for the future. Introducing our new sponsor is an easy task as both David and his son Cathal are valued club members and we are delighted to have them on board as our new sponsors of the oldest race the club programme. The company is headed up by David and Geraldine Reynolds and they have been serving Dungarvan and West Waterford since the year 2000. Known for their integrity and outstanding customer service, they have built a stellar reputation in the community. Whether you are buying or selling, Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds ensures the best possible deal in terms of service and price for your property. This commitment to excellence has propelled them to become the leading property company in West Waterford and earned them the Sherry FitzGerald Countrywide Franchise of the Year award for two consecutive years (2006 and 2007).Located at a brand new premises on Grattan Square, Dungarvan, their stunning, modern offices and showrooms feature state-of-the-art technology, creating an unparalleled customer experience in West Waterford. The 4,500 sq. ft. space showcases their impressive portfolio of properties, setting a new standard in the local real estate market. This new involvement with our club in a sponsorship role for David won’t be his first as way back in the 1999 the club hosted the National marathon here in Dungarvan, it was the last time the national was organised by a club before it became part of the Dublin city marathon and we had 500 runners participating in that great event that day, all finishers received a commemorative medal for their participation and these medals were sponsored by David who was the manager at that time of the First National Bank on Grattan Square . David an avid runner himself mentioned how delighted he is that his company are involved with the club as a new sponsor and the Dungarvan 10k especially and he is looking forward to many years in this partnership as the running boom presently in this country grows and grows. The race headquarters is at the Dungarvan GAA club pavilion (by kind permission) which is where the presentation of prizes for the race will take place immediately after the event. The race will start and finish in the same place as last year at the Industrial Estate just off the N25, with just a short jog to and from the Dungarvan GAA club grounds.

DUNGARVAN 10k 1983-2025.

40 RACES OVER 42 YEARS.

The oldest race in our race calendar is the Dungarvan 10k and looking through the Dungarvan Leader paper archives makes for very interesting reading. The event is going 42 years but we have had only 40 races-due of course to the years 2000 and 2001 when we had Covid restrictions.  The race started off in 1983 and actually that first race was in fact a half marathon which started on the Youghal Road heading out to Tarr’s Bridge before coming back into town finishing on O’Connell Street. The inaugural winner of this race was Pat Whyte then a native of Castlemartyr and later of course moved to Dungarvan and is still residing here and owner of a thriving print business Print master and Sign Master on the industrial estate, before all of this business acumen Pat was a top athlete as you can see from the time he ran on that day and the Ladies winner was Ann Murphy who made the trip from the Dublin for the race winning in a time of 86.37.Incidentally the race was organised that year to help raise funds for the Presentation convent building fund. The following year the race distance changed to a 10 miler with Ray Treacy winning with a time of 49.40 and local Ballinamult lady Kathleen Connors then running with the Déise AC club won the Ladies race in 65.55.Kathleen went on to win the next two 10 mile races along with Dungarvan’s Tony Ryan doing likewise, Tony in winning in 1985 ran a time of 48.33 . In 1987 the event was changed to the 10km distance and has remained at this distance to this day. The first 10 mile race in 1984 started at the Old Market Building on Lower Main St and the following two years the race started at the Ard Scoil with all three races finishing in the middle of the Grattan square. Moving on then the race start changed once again and from 1987 to 2002 it started outside the old cinema on O Connell street now the site of beautiful town houses. The race came straight down through the square over the causeway Abbeyside, Duckspool ,through the old railway bridge by Council offices and out to Boithrin Na Rua down Mary St finishing in the middle of the square. Imaging using these mentioned above routes these days, I think not. The course changed again with then increase in traffic with a new route in 2003 with the help of Dungarvan GAA club to their grounds in Clogherane and here we have remained to this day, using the Brickey, Kilmurray, Cork road course which is still our race course. The race has seen a variation of sponsors over this period which have included
