DOOCEYS ORIEL BAR BALLYMACARBRY 5 MILE ROAD RACE.
The inaugural race was held in 1995 as a handful of local runners came together with the idea of the event to raise monies in aid of the Ballymacarbry Primary school building fund. Frank Bolger, Tony McCarthy, Francis Connolly and Alan Whyte were the main event organisers for many years along with many other local helpers, some are still involved in the race to this day and our race starter is Frank Bolger each year. The inaugural race winners were Sean Foley Waterford AC 25.44 and Ann Cronin Carrick On Suir AC 37.29.From 1995 to 2024 a total of 27 races were held in the 30 year period as 2 years were lost with the Covid pandemic 2000 and 2001 and another year the race was cancelled due to the death of a local Lady this was in 2005.Those with the most victories include Raivis Zakis, William Harty and Kevin Maunsell have 3 each and for the Ladies Jackie Carty ,Corinna Walsh, Kate Veale ,Norma Wall and Sinead Cummins all have 2 apiece. The course records are held by David McCarthy West Waterford AC from the year 2012 when he ran a time of 23.55 and the Ladies record is by Mary Sheehan Grange Fermoy AC 29.38 set back in 1997.The athletes to have the 2nd fastest times are Evan Fitzgerald West Waterford AC 24.59 recorded in 2023 and he is the only other athlete behind David to break the 25 minute barrier in this race .In the Ladies behind Mary we have a time jointly shared by Sinead Cummins St. Joseph’s AC 29.49 in 2002 and Pauline Lambe Waterford AC who ran exactly the same time in 2010.The sponsors of the race have been involved from day one also Tony and now Michael Doocey of Doocey’s Oriel Bar to this day have been loyal supporters of the race. Long may the Ballymac 5 continue.
