DUNGARVAN LEADER DROMANA 5 .

It was interesting to have a look back through the Leader Newspaper archive’s during the week and reminisce on this great race which has stood the test of time and reached now its 31st year. The race started in 1993 when Jimmy Mulligan and Mary Sheehan were the inaugural winners. Jimmy a super athlete of that time only ran and won the race this first time, while Mary was winning races all over Waterford, Cork Tipperary and beyond. Mary actually won the race 6 times and set a course record in 1999 of 29.08 which was only broken last year 2024  by Kealy Tideswell Clonmel AC who ran a time of 29.00 . Speaking of course records the men’s course record was set in 1994 at the 2nd running of the race 1994 when John Treacy ran a time of 23.49.The race course was chosen because it was the famed training run to and from school of John’s back in his days at St Ann’s school in Cappoquin when John would run to and from school while his twin sister Liz brought the school bags on the local school bus. John was actually more or less retired from running when he ran this time in 1994 as with the persistence from one of the race organisers over a number of years he finally gave in and came along to actually run the race and in doing set a fantastic time which has yet to equalled. Sandis Bralitis West Waterfrod AC has won the race 4 times and likewise the Harty brothers William and Philip have both won the race 4 times each. Raivis Zakis was our winner on 3 occasions. The above mentioned Mary Sheehan has won the Ladies race an in creditable 6 times .Corinna Walsh is the holder of 4 titles while Jackie Stamp Kilmore AC  won 3 times. The 2nd fastest time ever ran by a male was two weeks ago when Evan Fitzgerald ran a brilliant 24.16 and the 2nd fastest time for a lady was Mary Sheehan 29.08. For the record the first race director of the Dromana 5 back in 1993 one Tony Ryan actually never ran the event itself despite having a personal best for 5 miles of 23.52 which he set in Churchtown South Ballycotton  in 1986  at a time remember when there were no Garmins, no carbon plated racing shoes and no gels only water from a churn  and 100 miles a week.
