WEST WATERFORD TRACK DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES AT PACE.

Huge numbers of young athletes had a fantastic night of running at the Primary School Games
on the last two thursday nights. The event attracted record numbers of children, as well as their
parents, teachers and families from all over West Waterford. There were some amazing
performances on both nights, but most importantly the children enjoyed the event immensely
and it left many hungry for more running! Events such as these show the passion and
enthusiasm locally for the sport of athletics.

Given the numbers involved in athletics in the West Waterford area, the idea of the west of the
county housing its very own 8-lane athletics track, including field events, has long been a dream
of West Waterford Athletics Club. The West Waterford Athletics Club Track Development
Committee, set up specifically to realise this dream, have been working tirelessly in the
background with over 12 months. The Track Committee recently held a very fruitful meeting with
valued members of West Waterford AC, those who have vast experience of competing,
coaching and officiating in field events around the world spearheaded by Brother Patrick Lennon
OSA who has dreamed for decades of an athletics facility one day being constricted at St
Augustines College. The purpose of this meeting was to plan the layout of the track in terms of
field events facilities. Ideas were shared and drawings are currently being developed, with
subsequent meetings planned in the near future.

The Track Committee have been overwhelmed with the support received for the project over the
past 14 months, both from athletics clubs and from the wider community. The club will continue
to keep the public updated on progress, and encourage anyone who is interested in fundraising
for this community amenity to come forward by contacting wwactrackdevelopment@gmail.com
or any member of the club committee.
