42nd ANNUAL SHERRY FITZGERALD REYNOLDS DUNGARVAN 10 K.
The 42nd Annual Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds Dungarvan 10K attracted a large field on Friday evening with 180 runners taking to the streets of Dungarvan for another hugely successful staging of one of the club’s flagship events.The race once again this year had Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds as overall sponsor, and both the club and sponsors were delighted with the success that this new partnership has brought to the event, Thankfully, the great spell of weather we are currently witnessing continued Friday evening , creating excellent conditions for runners and spectators alike.As the fifth race in West Waterford AC’s Summer Road Race Series, the Dungarvan 10K continued the impressive momentum of this year’s program reflecting the growing popularity of the series and the tremendous work of the club’s volunteers behind the scenes.West Waterford AC would like to sincerely thank all the runners who continue to support the club’s events year after year. Your participation plays a vital role in keeping local road running alive and thriving, and your continued support is greatly appreciated. A special word of thanks goes to title sponsors Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds, with David and Geraldine Reynolds at the helm and our thanks to Cormac Curran who was in attendance to present the prizes to the race winners. Their support is greatly valued, and the club looks forward to a long and successful partnership. The club also extends its gratitude to everyone who helped make the event possible. Jamie Mills Conor Norris and John Mc Garth who led the road management team, Gerry Cantwell who measured and marked the course, supported by a large group of volunteer stewards who ensured the race was conducted safely and efficiently. Thanks also to those who provided refreshments in the clubhouse after the race, where runners enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea and the opportunity to catch up following the event. The administration team of Ann Dunford, Tom Leahy, Ray Burke, Karen Ryan, Declan O’Callaghan, Hannah O’Mahony and Shirley Flynn once again ensured the smooth running of entries, finish-line operations and results, Liam O Donnell on van duty, while Ann Dunford also coordinated the prize presentations. West Waterford AC is grateful to Dungarvan GAA Club, for the use of the clubhouse and facilities, and to everyone who assisted with the clean-up afterwards a big thank you. our thanks to DC Images for the lovely photos on the night. The race brought our summer programme of road races to a finale and our thanks to all our sponsors and helpers in the various events , we hope to do it all again in 2027.
AIDAN CONNELL TO THE FORE ONCE AGAIN.
Aidan Connell (West Waterford AC) successfully defended his title at the 42nd annual Sherry Fitzgerald Reynolds sponsored Dungarvan 10 k on Friday evening, producing another commanding performance to win the 10K in 32:34.Connell, who also won the race last year in 33:11, improved on that time by 37 seconds and has now claimed four of the six races in this year’s Summer Series, underlining his excellent form.Daniel Murphy (Waterford AC) finished second in 34:40, with Dermot O’Brien (individual) taking third place in 34:45 after a closely contested battle for the runner-up positions. West Waterford AC also enjoyed success in the category awards. Mark Flynn win the over 40 Category in 37.07 John Coffey won the Over 45 category in 35:29, Eugene O’Keeffe (Carrick On Suir AC ) claimed the Over 50 title in 38:21, and John Cashman (Midleton AC) was first Over 60 in 43:35. The junior prize went to Antoine Artiglia (individual), who finished in 44:25. West Waterford AC rounded off a successful evening by winning the team prize through the efforts of Alan Ryan, Dermot Gough and Dermot Ryan who had 35 points for victory .

TERRIFIC 5th OVERALL TO TAKE LADIES VICTORY FOR CIARA O NEILL.
Ciara O’Neill of Clonmel AC produced a superb performance to claim the women’s title at the Sherry FitzGerald Dungarvan 10K, crossing the line in an excellent 36:21. In a race packed with quality, O’Neill’s run was good enough to see her finish an incredible fifth overall, underlining the strength of her performance on her first visit ever to this race . Lauren Dermody of Castlecomer AC secured second place in 37:19 after another impressive display, while Sarah Mulcahy of Cork Track Club completed the podium, finishing third in 41:03.
West Waterford AC enjoyed another successful day on home roads, collecting several individual category prizes as well as the women’s team title. Ciara Barry was first in the O35 category with a fine run of 47:50, Natalie Sheehan once again demonstrated her consistency by winning the O40 category in 42:08, successfully defending the title she also claimed in 2025, while Gráinne Dilleen took O45 honours in 49:26. Helen Ryan claimed the O50 title in 51:51. In the junior category, Jessica Grigor continued her impressive record by retaining the title she first won in 2025, finishing in 55:05 The West Waterford trio of Angela Tobin, Kate Keogh and Tara Ní Reachtagain combined to take the Ladies team title rounding of a very successful evening for the host club West Waterford AC .

The 32nd Rás na Rinne will be held on this coming Friday 24th July at 7.30 pm. A great unique route that starts at the Barracks cross, An Rinn, heading downhill to An Coinigéar strand. Participants then head out to the tip of the Coinigéar beach, running on the sand side and returning on the grass side, finishing back at the Barracks cross. A beautiful scenic run in West Waterford that has something for everyone. Race numbers will be available for collection from Halla Pobail na Rinne between 6.15pm and 7.15pm on the evening of the race.Hand carved Criostal na Rinne perpetual trophy (‘Corn Ui Dhroma’) for the overall winner. Prizes for individual and category winners. A 42 krunning t-shirt for all who register and complete the route. JOE WINS 10 MILE ROAD GOLD.
Congratulations to club member Joe Gough who won the national Irish Runner 10 mile road championships over 70 held in the Phoenix park Dublin last Sunday morning . Joe recorded a time of 1.09.35 to take year another gold in his masters age Category.Joe had earlier won the 5 mile championship so a nice road double gold for 2026.
GAFFNEY STRIKES EUROPEAN BRONZE FOR IRELAND AND WEST WATERFORD.
Isabelle Gaffney produced a magnificent performance to win bronze for Ireland at the European Under-18 Track and Field Championships in Rieti on Sunday, capping an outstanding three days of competition in sweltering conditions.The West Waterford athlete clocked 2:06.10 in the final — equalling her personal best — to secure a place on the podium and deliver a memorable medal for Ireland.Gaffney’s bronze was the reward for a superb championship campaign. She safely negotiated the heats on Friday before producing another composed display in Saturday’s semi-final, where she finished second to book her place in the final. Returning to the track on Sunday in an intensely hot stadium, she delivered a wonderfully tactical race, staying in contention throughout before showing tremendous determination in the closing stages to claim the bronze medal.The Irish supporters in Rieti provided fantastic encouragement, and Gaffney responded with a performance of maturity and courage beyond her years, earning a richly deserved European medal.For West Waterford, the achievement is another source of immense pride, as the club celebrates having yet another athlete competing — and succeeding — at the very highest level of international athletics.Well done, Isabelle , from everyone at the senior club in West Waterford. Your European bronze medal is a tremendous achievement and an inspiration to athletes throughout the club and beyond.
