7th ANNUAL OLD HEAD FINANCIAL BALLINAMEELA 5K ROAD RACE ON THIS FRIDAY JULY 18th .
The final race in our club summer programme of road races will be the Ballinameela 5k road race and Fun Run which will be held on this coming Friday July 19th at 7.30 pm. Registration online for the race is set at 10 with number collection at Community hall from 6.15 pm. entry fee on the night will be 15 euro. This course is as flat as you could imagine and one which will throw up many 5k PB’s. Showers and Changing Facilities and of course the important refreshments will be available at the centre afterwards.
31ST ANNUAL CÉIM AR CHÉIM RÁS NA RINNE FRIDAY AUGUST 1ST.
The 31st Rás na Rinne will be held on Friday 1st August at 7.30 pm. A great unique route that starts at the Barracks cross, An Rinn, heading downhill to An Coinigéar strand. Participants then head out to the tip of the Coinigéar beach, running on the sand side and returning on the grass side, finishing back at the Barracks cross. A beautiful scenic run in West Waterford that has something for everyone. Race numbers will be available for collection from Halla Pobail na Rinne between 6.15pm and 7.15pm on the evening of the race.Hand carved Criostal na Rinne perpetual trophy (‘Corn Ui Dhroma’) for the overall winner. WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON SET FOR AUGUST 30th.
On 30th August 2025 at 9 am West Waterford Athletic Club will host our 7th annual Waterford Greenway Half Marathon .Entries are now open for this event. The race course is along the Waterford Greenway and in conjunction with Waterford City and County Council covering a distance of 13.1 miles along the now famous old Waterford/Dungarvan Railway line. This fantastic amenity opened officially in 2017 and has already experienced visitors from all over the country and beyond. Users are amazed by this 46 km spectacular off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan. ST.JOHNS SPECIAL SCHOOL TO BENEFIT FROM WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON.
Each year for the Waterford Greenway half marathon we partner up with a charity that will benefit from the donated monies by the runners taking part in the event. This year we are delighted to announce our charity partners for the event will be St.Johns Special School ,Dungarvan As all our supporters know we try to raise awareness for important causes and charities with our events and this year the chosen charity we are supporting is St. Johns special school which is a special school for Children with a Mild or Moderate General Learning Disability, with two classes for children with a Severe to Profound General Learning Disability. They cater for boys and girls aged between 4 and 18 years from a wide catchment area which covers Dungarvan and West Waterford, and from Kilmacthomas to East Cork, and areas of South Tipperary. St. John’s strives to provide a well-ordered, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual physical, moral and cultural needs of the pupils are identified and addressed. FINE PERFORMANCES BY HOLMES AND POWER AT CORK CITY SPORTS
The annual Cork City Sports were held in glorious sunshine last Wednesday evening at the MTU track, an event which is on the World Continental tour calendar with athletes from around the globe competing. The club had 2 athletes in action at the prestigious event Lucy Holmes 800 meters and Micheál Power 3.000 meters. Lucy continued her great vain of current form when posting a time very close to her PB clocking 2.04.73 for 5th place finish in a stacked field. Micheál ran a time of 8.08.22 for 14 place in a large field of athletes over the 3.000 meters race. Well done to both.
DAVID MC CARTHY WINS DOCKLANDS 5K.
1766 ran the Docklands 5k in Dublin last Thursday evening on what was warm but ideal conditions for the event. The course used for the 5k is a very flat, fast loop in Dublin’s Docklands area. Organised by the runners from Crusaders Athletic Club, the Docklands 5k race is held with the help of the generous sponsorship, provided by many companies located in the Docklands and surrounding areas. West Waterford AC Club member David Mc Carthy was the clubs only representative at the race and he made the trip count with an emphatic win posting an excellent time of 14.33 with Aaron Donnelly Dundrum South Dublin AC 2nd in 14.38 and 3rd was Sean O’Leary Clonliffe Harriers AC 14.53, the overall Ladies victory went to Mary Mulhare Portlaoise AC 16.46,Mary won the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 in 2024.Well done David on your latest road race victory.
WEST WATERFORD AC RACE WALKERS CLAIM PODIUM POSITIONS IN DUBLIN.
Dublin race walking summer challenge was held in St Ann’s Park Raheny Dublin last Sunday with athletes from 17 countries competing at the World ranking competition. There was an early 7.30 am start to the event for the 35 and 20km walkers because of heat concerns over the longer distances for the athletes. West Waterford AC athletes claimed podium positions with Kate Veale in the senior Ladies 10km race taking the victory with a time of 52.42.Sophie Beresford impressed in her event taking the race win in a field of 10 Sophie clocked an impressive 15.00 with the 2nd athlete 1 minute 12 seconds behind her. In the 500 meter race Tiarnach Costin in the under 12 finished 4th with a time of 2 minutes 55 seconds while his brother Tom Costin finished 2nd in the under 10 event with a time of 4.53. Aisling Hickey was 3rd in the girls under 14 2km race posting a time of 12.01. Great to see a good turnout of club walkers make the long trip to Dublin for the event. Well done to all pour race walkers.
LINDA ON THE ISLAND.
Well done to club member Linda O’Neill a member Tiarnach Costin of our Fit4life group on a Tuesday evening. Linda completed the Bere Island midsummer 5k run last Saturday in sweltering heat on an undulating course,Linda completed the race in 29.12.
