The club needs as many members and friends to help us make this a great race and a great day for West Waterford AC and for our town.
IMPORTANT RACE DAY DETAILS.
The course this year will remain the same as last year’s course, starting on the Youghal Road as usual but it will start near to the Amber Garage, the race will do a short loop around Mitchell St. down Collins Road, back out the Youghal road taking a right turn down to Haleon, taking another right turn here down through the finish line and onto the N25 going left to the Spring roundabout, taking a left turn past the former Crystal factory out to Bushy Park, and left down to the canal Road coming out at Ring cross, back in the Youghal road all the way to Haleon turning left up side of Haleon taking a right at top to GSK roundabout turning right to finish line at Cappoquin Transport depo. So plenty of opportunity for spectators to view the race on a few occasions. We do ask that spectators park well away from the course as they will not have access around the course itself as there will be restrictions in place during the race. Everyone’s cooperation is needed here for the smooth running of the event and we thank you in anticipation of this. Please note also that all prizes for this year’s John Treacy Dungarvan 10 will be posted out to our winners the days following the race. Only the overall top individual race winners will be presented with their prize at the finish line.

FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE.
THE HEAT IS ON FOR THE LONG COURSE RUNNERS.
Sometimes we are born lucky as the saying goes , once again last Wednesday after a day of horrible rain by start time of our league it was the most pleasant night you could imagine for January ,no rain ,not a buff of wind and 12 degrees. In last week’s round 10 we changed things up a little with the handicaps as we left four groups on the long course off in much larger groups of runners. With another bumper turnout for the long course last week with 220 runners. Our first runner home on the night was Donal O’Mahony with a time of 37.51 Donal was followed by Jessie Mulcahy in 42.31 with Niamh Curran 3rd in 48.19.Our hope now for this coming Wednesday when we will have a split mass start on the long course one group going off at 6.45 and the next group at 6.50 ,please check your group on Facebook or in the hall when you come down Wednesday night. Also remember that there is our winter league travel mug for anyone completing 8 of the 11 nights of the league, this mug will be distributed to those eligible to get one in the hall before the run, best of luck to all on the final night. As we go into the final round of the league tables could not be closer with just 16 points separating 1st and 2nd Jack Mc Carthy on 2017 leads from Eoin Kelly on 2001 with Paul Mc Grath a former winner on 1970 points could it be one of these three or will an athlete leap from down the division and spring a surprise to come and grab the honours at the death. As you can see the divisional winners are so tight in nearly all the various divisions so remember all in contention this week is hell for leather gathering as many points on the final night as you can, please note the short course will start at 6.40 pm sharp followed by the long course start. Go for it !!!!Our thanks to our friends at Avonmore who were on hand at last week’s league to supply all the runners with Avonmore Protein drinks at the finish line to help with their recovered, special word of thanks to Dan Bolton who looked after this on behalf of Avonmore.

SHORT COURSE IMPROVEMENTS ARE MIGHTY.
The one thing we notice as we draw near the end of the current Fordes Daybreak Winter league is the improvements being made by the short course runners in particular, many came along the first night in wonderment as to could they manage the distance without having to stop ,well that is well and truly put to bed as the improvements over the 11 weeks by these runners is immense and to be commended with another bumper turnout on the short course last week 122 toeing the line. In the sort course last week our first runner past the past the post last week was Jane O’Sullivan in a time of 21.53 followed by Michael Coakley 20.44 and 3rd was Stacey Doyle in a fast 18.30. It’s all down to this week’s mass start now so best of luck to all on the short course league. The points system in use for this year’s league it has to be said is working out great. As you can see there is very little between athletes in most of the divisions and indeed in the overall as well. It’s really hard to predict at this stage who will even be crowned the champ, even with only one round to go. James Farrell is now holding a slender lead at the top of division one with 1254 points from Adam Kelly who is second with 1214 points and Cyril Flavin with 1165 is in 3rd spot. All we can say here is may the best runner win, but it going to be close. So it’s all down to the final mass start night this Wednesday. There’s a nice group stacked up in the top 10 placing’s all still in with a shout of becoming the new winter league champion in this year . The division battles are also so very very tight with some leaders leading with just one single point separating 1st and 2nd.Also remember that there is our winter league travel mug for anyone completing 8 of the 11 nights of the league, this mug will be distributed to those eligible to get one in the hall before the run, best of luck to all on the final night.
