The many months of planning is shortly to kick into action as D day approaches with the running of the 33rd annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race imminent. The race day numbers and packs will be posted out in a few days to all entered. This means of course all you have to do on race day is to be at the start line for the race start time of 11AM with your number pinned to the FRONT of your club running singlet. When you have finished the race and cross the finish you will receive you’re goodie bag with lots of treats for you to enjoy after the race and you will also receive a high quality dri-fit Nike running top. This race is the biggest undertaking by the club each year and as a result we rely heavily on your support we need people to steward the course and remember the motto many hands make light work,if you haven’t already contacted Karen Ryan our steward coordinator you might consider doing so she can be contacted on 086 8245683. The club needs as many members and friends to help us make this a great race and a great day for West Waterford AC and for our town.

FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE LONG COURSE.

FITZGERALD BREAKS THE 26 MINUTE BARRIER.

After a no show the previous Wednesday due to the inclement weather it was back full throttle this week at the Fordes Daybreak winter league which has just 2 more rounds remaining. From the off this week in our report we must firstly mention a very special happening in last week’s league round 9 which has to be applauded when an athlete broke the unthinkable 26 minute barrier for our winter league long course route. Evan Fitzgerald who joined our club only last year and having broken the old course record on 3 different occasions in the current league bettered his 24.04 with a blistering 25.59 effort  on the 5.2 mile course. For those of us who are running the league or have in the past ran the course we all know how fast this time is on that course, outstanding is one word used by a fellow league runner. Evan was the last to leave the sports centre with a time handicap of 24 minutes yes 24 minutes after the first of the runners went off, he finished 3rd runner home with that new course standard 25.59. He is now running 1 minute and 30 seconds faster than any one has run the course before, credit where its due it can’t be left unannounced now can it. Last week saw a huge turnout of 247 finishers on the long course which is a huge number and great to see. From the league tables point of view it could be any closer in all divisions and indeed  it looks like it will come down to the wire with most divisions only separated by a points of so, most if not all of the divisional winners are hard to call it’s so tight at the top and the same can be said about who our overall winner will be this year as there are still quite a few contenders in the hunt to list the cup for 2025.

.

This week we will have a handicap run again but with a difference in that there will be larger groups going off together with a 6.40 start time.

TIGHT AT THE TOP OF SHORT COURSE DIVISIONS.

The weather conditions were idea last week for round 9 of the league having missed round 8 the previous week due to the icy conditions. A great turnout of 119 ran the short course last week another outstanding turnout of runners. There are now only 2 more nights left before the conclusion of this year’s league. This section of the league specifically has first timers and beginners in mind and is a manageable distance for most as it covers 2.4 miles in total and it’s great to see so many new comers this year getting into the fun and the banter that this league is designed to be.Looking at the tables after week 7 it’s so close to call with nothing between the leaders in all 12 divisions, which argues for some very interesting running over the final 2 rounds. Many of the divisional top spots are so very close with 3 rounds remaining but remember so much can change in a night or two so it’s all to play for yet. Cara Conway is holding that top spot on 780 points with Megan Daly hot on her heels on 769 points just 2 clear of Páraig De Burca with 767 .
