The club needs as many members and friends to help us make this a great race and a great day for West Waterford AC and for our town.

FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE LONG COURSE.

After an afternoons heavy rain we were blessed again at last week’s league which was round 9 when the heavy rain had cleared the Dungarvan sky’s just before we started the cloaks at 6.40.With only 2 rounds remaining it all still to play for as they say. Before last week’s league began we paused for a minutes silence which was observed by all in memory of Mrs Noreen Flynn Clonea ,mother of one of our finish line personal, Shirley Flynn , Noreen passed to her eternal reward the day before and all in the club and at the league send condolences to the Flynn family at this sad time. At last week’s league which was round 9 of the 11 rounds on the long course we had 216 competing another super turmout. Our first runner home was running the league for the very first time which is great to see that we are still getting runners coming along to give the league a go at this stage , so well done to Conor Mulligan who clipped around in a very fast 31.58,Conor was followed home by David Condan who is improving weekly as he now has his time down to 40.02 with Ger Durkan 3rd home in 44.43,The Brickey’s own Conor McGrath was next in 38.57 and he was followed in by Daniel Crotty 35.53 ,there’s a sub 35 minute run there for Daniel his getting close to breaking that barrier, our 6th home was Patrick Flynn 42.47 making it a top 6 for the men in last week’s round . For the record the first lady finisher was in 9th place Kathy Fitzpatrick 51.30.Turning to our all-important league tables of the long course the word on everyone’s lips, who is going to be lift that Forde’s Daybreak cup for the long course this year , well it so tight at the top of affairs still that it’s impossible to call and likewise looking down through the various tables and divisions as only a handful of points separate runners in many.Jack Mc Crathy holds a slender and I mean slender lead on 1784 points over Eoin Kelly with 1770 points 14 points is nothing so Jack has to watch his back and give it his all over the remaining 2 rounds, David Donnelly is by no means out of the running with 1758 points, previous winner Paul Mc Grath is lurking in 4th with 1749 points or could we have a late sprint to the finish line from Ciaran Curran and of course our highest placed lady Céire Barry is defiantly not out of contention and it’s been a few years now since we had a Lady winner of the long course. Look even if I was a betting man and I’m not I could not predict who it might be. As they say it’s all to play for.

TIGHT AT THE TOP OF SHORT COURSE DIVISIONS.

The weather conditions were idea at last week’s league and this was despite the torrents of rain which fell in the afternoon but the runners of the winter league were not to be denied and the rain had completely cleared by the time the clocks started at 6.40. On the short course last week we had 127 taking part on the night ,and the top spot was filled by Emmet Prendergast in a time of 18.44,Emmet was the only man in the top 6 finishers as all other were Ladies so well done to them. In 2nd place was Nessa O’Dwyer 20.10 followed by Stacey Doyle 21.08 and Paula Cunningham was 4th in 26,32, Sharon O’Brien was next 27.18 and 6th home was Caoimhe Veale 23.29.Just like the long course we await with bated  breath to see who will be victorious on the short course as again it’s still too early to make a call with only a whisker separating runners at the top and also in all the divisions down along. From the league tables point of view just like the long course tables ,it could not be any closer in all divisions and indeed  it looks like it will come down to the wire with most divisions only separated by a points of so, most if not all of the divisional winners are hard to call it’s so tight at the top and the same can be said about who our overall winner will be this year as there are still quite a few contenders in the hunt to lift the Fordes Daybreak cup for 2026.James Farrell is still clinging onto a slender lead of just 49 points he is on 1139 from Adam Kelly 1090 with Cyril Flavin still well in the hunt on 1040 points. It’s All to play for guys best of luck to all.
