THOUSANDS DECEND ON DUNGARVAN FOR THE 34th ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE ROAD RACE.
Thousands of runners and spectators descended on Dungarvan last Sunday for the 34th annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile Road Race, with a record 2,900 athletes crossing the finish line, the largest number in the event’s history. After weeks of poor weather, conditions proved favourable on race day as the previous weeks rain had abated which gave way to bright dry day for the 11:00am start time and conditions were generally excellent for racing. The race was officially started by Liz Treacy twin sister of Olympian, World Cross Country Champion and Honorary Life Member of West Waterford AC, John Treacy, from the Youghal Road. Spectators were treated to an impressive sight as the large field made its way through the one-mile town loop before heading out into the surrounding countryside. Participants and supporters alike expressed their delight at the successful staging of the event, which is the largest 10-mile road race in the country. West Waterford athletic club would like to pay tribute to the outstanding support received from the local community. Hosting an event of this scale is a major undertaking, and the efforts of volunteers, stewards, sponsors and local services were instrumental in ensuring a safe and successful day for both runners and spectators. The race once again this year produced a number of closely contested battles throughout the field, with many runners achieving personal best performances on what is regarded as the best 10 mile course on the Island. This year once again we had the services of Myrunresults a professional chip timing company, this took a lot of pressure off our timing crew and we thank myrunresults for their professionalism and having the results out in the fastest time imaginable, they really do in a major way add to the success of this event. West Waterford athletic club were fortunate also once again this year to have on board our race associate sponsors. Flahavans, Nike Ireland, Intersport Elverys, Avonmore Protein Milk, Garveys Supervalu Dungarvan, Allied Irish Bank Dungarvan, Country Stores Dungarvan, Centra Garage Dungarvan ,Munster Sign and Print, Dungarvan Motor Mall. Along with a host of other local businesses who supported the event in so many ways. To Waterford city and county council and all the staff for their invaluable help ensuring that the course was in top order for the race we are most grateful. To the staff at Dungarvan Sports Centre who accommodated our goody bag packing Saturday. To all who donated to and helped to pack the goodie bags on Saturday thank you also. Thanks to all for their help with the clean-up and our crew on sweeper van duty Pat and Paul who combed the course making sure no trace was left behind. Thanks to all on duty at the start line and finish line crew they did brilliant all weekend. To Liam O Donnell on van duty along with Padraig Healy on PA. Dirk Baumann and his crew for their superb sound system and music. Eddie Dee and John Troy for the superb photos. A big thanks to those who looked after the water stations and for the great job they did in cleaning up the litter after, a major undertaking with a race of this magnitude so indeed many thanks to you All .To Denise Regan and her crew including our juvenile club members on goodie bag duty many thanks. A very special mention to three people who we simply couldn’t operate without, for their work with the traffic management and practical help leading up to race day and on the day itself and that’s Conor Norris, John Mc Grath and Jamie Mills, many thanks lads, (it must be getting easier at this stage) Thanks to our friends at Tried and Tested Triathlon club for all their help along with Dungarvan Cycling club for all their invaluable assistance also. We must extend our sincere thanks to all at Dungarvan Garda Station and Superintendent Laurence Sheahan for their continued support with this and all our events, the Garda role is vital to the success of this race and they are always most helpful and understanding in their dealings with us.Thanks to our medical team on the day from Shandon Clinic Dr David O’Mahoney and Nurse Anita Power and all the ambulance crew of Medicore for their professionalism and for making the trip to Dungarvan for the event. There are many other people to thank for their help on the day especially all the many stewards out on the course whom without we couldn’t possibly have held the event at all, Motor bike out riders and of course Karen Ryan who had the unenviable taske of coordinating the whole stewarding operation for the day, Karen you did brilliant as you usually do. Thanks to all our pacers who each and every year help athletes achieve their personal goals. Thank you to all the hard working committee at West Waterford athletic club under the stewardship of chairman Tom Leahy and finally, a huge thank you to the lady whose hand is on the overall controls, Ann Dunford our race director, Ann once again left no stone unturned in her efforts in what was a flawless event. To all I have forgotten to thank we do say a big thanks and well done to you all- roll on 2027.

AMERICAN EMILY SISSON RUNS AWAY WITH JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE.
She came and she conquered at last Sundays John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile road race, yes how brilliant it was to have an athlete of the calibre of Emily Sisson American marathon record holder ,7 times American national champion and 2 times Olympian. She was the bookies favourite as they say coming into the race and she defiantly lived up to this favouritism as what a performance we got in the ladies race from Emily who of course has Waterford connections in that she’s married to Shane Quinn an excellent athlete himself going back some years ago and she is daughter in-law to Waterford Olympian Brendan Quinn. Emily was on scholarship in Providence College Rode Island and coached by Ray Treacy , brother of John so lots of Waterford athletic connections. While Emily was in college there she won the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 5,000-meter. The following year, she elevated her status in American distance running by claiming her first U.S. title in the 10,000-meter at the USA Track and Field Championships. Emily next runs the Boston Marathon in April and Sunday’s race we hope has help her preparations we all wish her the very best.In the ladies as we said the crown for 2026 went to Emily Sisson of Team New Balance USA, who took victory in an outstanding time of 53:22.Second place went to Jessica Coyne of Leevale AC in 55:56, while Dee Grady of Ennis Track finished third in 56:40.In fourth place was Keely Tideswell of Clonmel AC, who ran 59:20, and fifth was Lauren Dermody of Castlecomer AC in 59:27. Niamh Staunton of St. Abban’s AC took sixth in 59:19, meaning the top six women all finished under the one-hour mark.Seventh was Ellie O’Driscoll of Liffey Valley AC in 61:17, with Carol Finn of Leevale AC eighth in 61:33. Caroline Hassett of Templemore AC placed ninth in 61:37, and Molly O’Donnell of Liffey Valley AC completed the top ten in 62:11.The age categories were as keenly contested as ever and it was brilliant to see so many Ladies taking on the 10 mile distance, whatever your time or position we are sure that everyone enjoyed the day and the experience and we hope to see you all back in 2027 when we will line up for the 35th edition of the race.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FORDES DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE CONCLUDES.
It finished as it started great weather great numbers and fun all the way as for the 31st time the country’s oldest and original winter running league has come to an end after 11 Wednesday nights of great running around the street of our beautiful town. The prize-winners were presented with their prizes by league sponsor Kevin Forde of Fordes Daybreak Sunday night, Our thanks to Kevin for his generous sponsorship of the league. Also once again i would like to thank the many stewards and helpers that make these leagues possible. The main stay of its success we feel is the fact that it’s open to all and brings together the elite as well as the fun runner and this is what has made it appealing for so many years, the league has never been won by the fastest runner in any of the 24 years of its existence. Thanks to all our runners who supported the league in such big numbers, due to limited space this week a full league report and photos will be in the local press over next few weeks.
