WATERFORD GREENWAY HALF MARATHON THIS SATURDAY AUGUST 29th.
Course information.
This is perhaps one of the flattest routes for a half marathon in the country with a net elevation of -100 mts.The race start is now 2km from the coach house café and the finish line will be 100 meters the Waterford side of the Railway café in Ballinroad. Not only is it flat it also contains some incredible scenery along the way. From the old Workhouse built in 1850 in the beautiful village of Kilmacthomas over the Kilmacthomas viaduct to the stunning views of the Comeragh mountains to the North, cross over Durrow viaduct past Durrow Railway Station where the old platform and station still stand. Then it’s on to the spectacular Ballyvoile tunnel, a 400mt long tunnel which is full of atmosphere (don’t forget to watch out for the fairy door’s on either side). Next you will cross over the Ballyvoile viaduct, blown up in 1922 but now restored to its former glory. From here you can almost smell the sea as you round the headland and take in the spectacular views of Clonea strand and Dungarvan Bay. Then it’s downhill all the way to the finish as you take in the sights along the way, through the 12 mile mark and the playground in Ballinroad to the finish line just 400 meters from the playground area.

The physio is always our first port of call when injury strikes. In an ideal world we should all be visiting a physio/ physical therapist for maintenance purposes only, to enhance performance. Some years ago in this race we introduced 2 special cups when the club and families of two of our cherished members Paul Brunnock and Paula Collins who sadly have passed to their eternal reward and are remember by us all with the introduction of these two beautiful trophies presented in their memory. The Paul Brunnock cup to the men’s winner and the Paula Collins cup to the Ladies winner of the Waterford Greenway half marathon So for the fourth occasion these two cups will have the winners names inscribed on them

MIKEY RUNS FRANK DUFFY 10.
The annual Frank Duffy 10 miler was held last Saturday in the Phoenix park Dublin and a field of 3,680 competed.The overall race winner was Cormac Dalton Mullingar Harriers AC in a time of 49.17 and the ladies winner was Maebh Brannigan Galways City Harriers AC in 56.59.The club had one athletes taking part here when Mikey Coleman improved his 10 mile pb with a time of 56.55 finishing a creditable 19th overall.
IMRA WIN FOR PAUL KENNEDY IN MOUNT MELLEARY MOUNTAIN RUN
The inaugural IMRA Mount Melleary Mountain Race was held last Sunday, featuring a challenging 250-metre climb, with the start and finish at Mount Mellary Abbey. Congratulations to West Waterford’s Paul Kennedy on taking the win.Also taking part was Joe Gough Joe’s finishing position is not known at this point, with the full results yet to be published.Well done to Paul on a great victory, and to Joe for taking part in the first staging of this new event.
IRISH ATHLETES PRODUCE THE GOODS AT EUROPEAN TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS.
At the European Athletics Championships – held in Birmingham last week the Irish team brought great pride to the thousands of traveling supporters and those who watched from their sitting rooms at home.Mark English set the scene for an unforgettable week for our sport when he produced a masterclass to claim a historic European 800m gold before Rhasidat Adeleke added a stunning 200m silver . English (Finn Valley AC) became the first Irish male athlete to win an individual gold medal at a European Outdoor Championships, delivering a tactically superb performance to take the 800m title in 1:45.26.Croatia’s Marino Bloudek claimed silver in 1:45.62, with Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui taking bronze in 1:45.71 Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) once again demonstrated her big-stage mentality with a sensational silver medal and Irish record in the women’s 200m final. The Tallaght athlete chased the British pair Hunt and Asher-Smith in the closing metres to secure silver in a brilliant 22.28, improving her own Irish record of 22.34 set in 2023 with Hunt claiming European gold in a European-leading 22.19, with Adeleke taking silver in 22.28 and Asher-Smith just one hundredth further back in 22.29 for bronze.Adeleke joins Sonia O’Sullivan as the only Irish athlete to have won European Championship medals at two different events.Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s AC) produced a magnificent seven-event performance to be crowned European heptathlon champion before Andrew Coscoran stormed to a brilliant 1500m bronze on the second last night with a stadium filled to the rafters with Irish flags .The 25-year-old finished with a lifetime-best total of 6,751 points, 38 points clear of Dutch athlete Emma Oosterwegel, with Sofie Dokter completing the podium.Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) added a fourth Irish medal of these championships with a superb bronze in a dramatic men’s 1500m final.The Dubliner delivered a brave and composed performance to claim his first senior major outdoor championship medal in 3:36.24.Netherlands’ Stefan Nillessen claimed gold in 3:35.70, Sweden’s Samuel Pihlström took silver in 3:36.16, with Coscoran just eight hundredths further back for bronze in 3:36.24.The result brought Ireland’s medal tally in Birmingham to four on a week of unforgettable Irish performances on the European stage .All in all the most successful Europe’s. track and field championships ever for Irish athletics with many more athletes making European finals seasons best’s and personal best’s being the order of the championship
DAVID MC CARTHY WINS CORK 10 k.
The St Finbarrs AC organised Cork 10k was held today Sunday on what were ideal co durations for the race a field of 1.068 completed the event. After his runners upspot a few days previous in the New Ross Greenway 5k race West Waterfords David Mc Carthy went one better when taking a 10 second victory over Aaron Hanlon Drogheda and District AC. David Clocked a running time of 40.27 with Aaron crossing g the finish post in 30.47. The ladies race was won by Sinead O Connor Leevale AC in 35.59.Two other club members ran very well also with Pat Hennessey finishing 7th in 33.21 and Cathal Reynolds taking a top 50 position in a time of 37.56. STREETS OF THURLES 5 k .
The streets of Thurles 5 k was held last Sunday with a field of 377 taking part. The overall race winners were Dermot Gorman Carrick On Suir AC in a time of 15.29 and first lady home was Laura Cooney Clonmel AC 16.54West Waterford AC had two athletes taking part with Gary Cantwell finishing a creditable 7th in a time of 16.36 and Gillian Prendergast will be pleased with her effort of 27.21.Well done to Gary and Gillian.
LIAM AND MARK RUN KILCOCK 10
The Kilcock Co Kildare 10 mile road was held last Sunday and was organised by St Cocas AC with a field of 383 competing. Overall race winner was Hugh Armstrong Ballina AC in a time of 50.01 and the ladies winner was Alice Wright Dublin Track in 55.07.There were two fine performances by West Waterford athletes with Liam Beresford running a time of 56.48 for 15th overall and Mark Flynn clipping around the 10 in 58.51 for 37th position, two fine performances . Well done to liam and Mark.
