ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL GARVEYS SUPERVALU AUTUMN LEAGUE CONCLUDES.
The Garvey’s Supervalu Autumn League concluded on Thursday Night (19th September) in St. Augustine’s College (by kind permission) after 5 excellent weeks of running. As usual, the Friary was in perfect condition for running as it always is at this time of the year. We are blessed to be able to use such a fantastic facility for some of our leagues and as a club we are most thankful. This year we were blessed with 5 lovely evenings for running. This is a league that is used by many runners as part of they’re autumn marathon preparation and by other to get ready for the upcoming winter league. Presentation of prizes took place after running on the last night of the league and Onra Power was on hand from Garveys SuperValu to do the presentations. PATRICK WALSH WINS THE 1 LAP
Patrick Walsh was a clear winner of the 1 lap league for 2019. Patrick finished first on 4 nights for a total of 4 points. His fastest run was 6.23 in week 4. In second was Aidan Reilly on 7 points. Aidan improved his time from 8.32 in week 1 to 7.50 on the last night. Well done to all the 1 lap runners – keep up the good work.
 
OISIN  O’RIORDAN DOMINATES THE 2 LAP.
Oisin O’Riordan dominated the 2 lap league with 5 first place finishes to finish on 4 points. Oisin saved his best run till last clocking his fastest time of 13.13 on the final night. Second was Mark Blackwell on 10 points with his fastest run being 15.02 (also in week 5). Next came Angeline Drennan on 14 points with her best time being 18.23 in week 4.Michael Moynihan took Division 2 on 21 points ahead of Margaret Whelan on 30 points. Well done to all the 2 lap runners.

GERARD O’REILLY AHEAD IN THE 3 LAP .
Gerard O’Reilly took 3 lap honours after 5 first place finishes to finish on the minimum 4 points. Gerard’s fastest run was the 22.53 he clocked in week 4. In second was Yevgeniy Chizikov on 8 points with Yev’s best run being the 23.33 he ran in week 4. Well done to all the 3 lap runners – keep up the good work.

JAMES WHELAN TAKES THE 4 LAP TITLE
James Whelan was a clear and deserving winner of the 4 lap league with 5 first place finishes to finish on the minimum 4 points. James’ best run was in week 4 when he ran 29.49 (the only run under 30 minutes for 4 laps in this year league). Mary Jane Enright was second on 11 points. Mary Jane’s fastest run was 33.22 in week 3. 
 
Ann Dunford took division 2 on 24 points, just ahead of Paul Brunnock on 27 points.  Well done to all the 4 lap runners.

COUNTY MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

JOHNNY O CONNOR WINS MENS. 
SILVER AND BRONZE FOR MORONEY AND CHIZHIKOVA.

The county masters cross country championships for 2019 were held last Sunday at St. Augustine’s college. The race was preceded by the juvenile B championships. The morning was beautiful for the final race in this year’s county championship, there was a small turnout of athletes on the day. In the men’s race over 4.000 meters there was gold and silver for West Waterford with Johnny O’Connor securing gold from club mate Joe Gough and Paschal Hally Waterford AC took bronze. West Waterford took the team title here with the Johnny, Joe, Ray Hahesy and Yev Chizhikova the scoring team also competing was Justin Coonan and Eoin O’Riordan. In the ladies race which was held over 3.000 meters it was gold for Waterford AC’s Aisling Ferguson who was well clear of the field with Nicola Moroney also putting in a good run to take Silver for West Waterford AC, Nicola also took silver in 2018,her team mate Diana Chizhokova brought home bronze and she took was in the bronze position in 2018. Elaine Keating Tramore finishing 4th. Well done to all club members who participated.

29th ANNUAL JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 .
ENTRIES OPEN ON NOVEMBER 1ST.

As and from November 1st entries will open for the 29th Annual John Treacy Dungarvan 10 which will be held on Sunday February 2nd 2020, with a start time of 1.30pm. West Waterford Athletic Club have announced details of the event which has established itself as a must run race on the Irish road running calendar with participants from all four corners of the country and beyond participating. The race has grown year on year and is a pre entry race which will close when 3,000 entries is reached. ( please note this race was full in a very short time last year ).West Waterford Athletic Club is delighted with the support it receives from its sponsors for this event, we are fortunate to have the support of AIB Bank, Garveys Super-Valu, Tipperary Water, Flahavan’s, Munster Signs & Print, Déise Design, along with many other local businesses and individuals who are all giving valuable support helping to make the day a great occasion for the town of Dungarvan. The race also incorporates the popular John Treacy Club Challenge Cup for men’s and ladies teams which has proved to be hugely competitive. We will again be calling on all the athletic clubs of Ireland to take on the challenge in 2020. The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 brings together the ideal race combination of fun runners, joggers, club athletes and top class internationals who compete over a fast flat 10 mile course around the historic town of Dungarvan, we look forward to welcoming you to our town on February 2nd 2020. MURRAYS PHARMACY TO SPONSOR 26th ANNUAL BRICKEY 4 IN AID OF GLENBEG NATIONAL SCHOOL. 
Bushy Park GAA grounds is the venue for the 26th annual Brickey Run. Again this year we are delighted to announce that Murray’s Pharmacy Dungarvan are to continue on with their sponsorship of the race we sincerely thank Elizabeth and all at Murrays Pharmacy for this kind gesture. The proceeds from this year’s race will be donated to Glenbeg National School.  The race distance will be over a very flat fast 5k loop around the Brickey valley starting and finishing at Bushy Park GAA grounds. The race will get under way at 11 am with registration taking place from 10.15 onwards in the GAA clubhouse Bushy Park. The Martin Curran Cup will be awarded to the first man on the day and the Jim Lyons memorial shield will be awarded to the first lady. The prize-giving will take place in the club house immediately after the race and refreshments will also be provided for all the runners.

CORK TO COBH.
The Annual 15 miler from Cork to Cobh recently saw a good turnout of West Waterford athletes taking part in the field of over 809 participants. The day was good weather wise for the large field of runners. This year’s overall winner was Michael Corbett 1.21.50 , the overall ladies winner was Aoife Cooke 1.27.11 finishing 9th overall. Our first man home was Ted O’Leary with a pb run of 1.40.38 taking two minutes of his previous best.He was followed by Paul club chairman Tom  Leahy 1.49.20 and Gerry Cantwell took the over 60 first prize with a run of 1.51.32 . Ann Dunford  no stranger to this Cork to Cobh race was our first lady across the finish line in a time of 2.01.58.Well done to all who completed the race.

TRAINING FOR YOUR FIRST JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10.?
If this is your first time training for a 10 mile race, or are returning to training after a break, we have a new beginner 10 mile training group. Under the guidance of experienced coaches we will give you the support needed, including a training plan, to get to the start line.For more experienced athletes we now have a Run specific Strength & Conditioning class solely for club members. This is an integral part of the training programme for the race and will aim to keep you strong and injury free.Both training groups were exceptionally popular last year and we look forward to training for the 2020 race. Strength and  Conditioning takes place in Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyside from 6.15-7.15 and the beginner training group meets at Eurospar from 6.30pm-7.30pm on Tuesday evenings.

WINTER TRAINING 2019 / 2020,
Following on from the success of last year’s Run specific strength and conditioning class we will return indoors after Dublin City Marathon to work on our strength.This class is a combination of mobility, activations, plyometrics and strength work. We all know S&C is important especially if you are riddled with niggles or are targeting a goal race and want to keep your body in the best shape possible.If you are struggling with the motivation to get on the floor and fit an S&C session into your week then struggle no more. This is an integral part of the training programme for the John Treacy 10 race and will aim to keep you strong and injury free. Strength & Conditioning takes place in Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyside from 6.15-7.15.Starting on November 5th. No need to book a space just turn up on the night and bring a mat with you.
 
26TH ANNUAL FORDE’S DAYBREAK WINTER LEAGUE .
ONCE OFF PAYMENT.
The clubs winter league which now enters its 26th year will begin in 6 week’s time.  This year the registration night will take place on the Wednesday October 30th.The following week the league will begin officially on November 6th.  On this particular night all those interested in taking part in the winter league are asked to come along and register to get their number. You will be issued with a number for a cost of €5. This number should be used every night that you run. We will have people on hand at the sports centre that will be available to answer any questions you may have and we will also explain the rules and regulations of the league as well as the two courses of the league .The first official night of the league will be the following week November 6th. For all those that won’t be able to make it to the sports centre on the first night of registration, you may register and get your number on the following Wednesday night. In fact, it’s possible to join the winter league at any stage throughout the course of the league. The cost of the league is €5, this is a once -off payment for your number and then €2 for each night for West Waterford AC club members and €3 for non-members. Last year we introduced the ability to pay in full for the league ,a once off payment, which will save you money if you intend running the league each night. For club members you can pay 30 euro ( this includes the 5 euro once off  number payment) and for non members you can pay a once off payment of 40 euro which also includes the 5 euro number payment charge. This amount will cover you for the full duration of the league.

HAPPY RETIREMENT.
All at the club wish popular club member Michael (Dixie) Deegan a very happy retirement from his post as editor of the Sports section of the Dungarvan Observer news paper. Michael recently turned off the Mac on a long career at the sports desk and was nothing but helpful to this scribe over many years and a great friend to our club of which he is a member, we wish Kathleen and himself and extended family many years of happiness.   
 
PB FOR PAT FITZGERALD IN CHICAGO MARATHON.
Huge congratulations to club member Pat Fitzgerald who today recorded a personal best marathon time of 2.56.04 at the Chicago marathon, this big performance from Pat has been in the melting pot for some time and today was his day. ” You get put what you put in”.

PASSING OF FRANKIE DEVLIN.
West Waterford athletic club extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Frankie Devlin Midleton AC who passed to her eternal reward a few days ago. Frankie was a regular at all West Waterford events in the late 1990’s into the 2000’s and a was a most popular lady making many friends within our club here. She particularly loved running the Colligan cup and was it was with great pride that she won the Colligan Ladies shield in 1997.She will be sadly missed by all her family and wider circle of friends .May she rest in peace
