J.B.White Schools Cross Country a Huge Success

All roads led to the Friary last Friday where there were a large number of participants in West Waterford’s annual schools cross country.  Over 400 youngsters took part in twelve cross country races held in the grounds of St Augustine’s College. A total of twenty six primary schools and three secondary schools competed this year.  Numbers were evenly divided between the boys’ and girls’ races and the biggest field was in the 2nd class boy’s race where 65 youngsters completed the course. It was a beautiful balmy autumn evening and conditions were ideal for cross country running.

As always competition was keen for the individual and team honours and the athletes were cheered on by a large gathering of parents and school friends. Individual honours were well distributed with athletes from seventeen primary  schools among the trophy winners.  Team honours were more widely spread this year with schools from Ardmore to Seafield winning team medals.

Ethain Ní Mhurchadha an Rinn, Rian Mc Grath Glenbeg, Pippa Wesley Ardmore, Aoibhinn Fitzgerald Scoil Gharbháin all added this year’s title to the ones they won last year, while Cathal Murphy Carriglea made it three in a row having won 2nd class in 2022, 3rd class in 2023 and 4th class in 2024

Well done to all the youngsters who competed last Friday night  Our thanks to our sponsor J.B. White Chartered Accountants, to St Augustine’s for the use of the Friary and to our club members and parents who helped out to ensure the smooth running of the event. Full results below

St. Senan’s Cross Country Kilmacow

We had our smallest representation at St Senan’s Open Cross Country where just nine athletes represented the club. In the under 9 girls Ayla Hogan benefited from her run in Tramore last week and came home in 6th place. Rachel Curran put in a great run in the final 100m to finish 6th and Eliza Healy completed her first race for the club making it in to the top 30.  There was some great finishing speed shown by Conor Queally and Shay Doherty as they finished 5th and 6th in the boys under 9 race. Andy Zakis was the clubs highest placed finisher on the day in 3rd place in the boys under 10 race. There was some stiff opposition from the Kilkenny and Wexfords clubs in the under 12 races  but West Waterford athletes were well in the mix with Ellie Mai Doherty 7th in the girls race and Tiernan Hogan the first Waterford boy home in 4th. Patrick Curran is improving with every outing and came home in 15th place.

Day 1 of the County Championships on Sunday Next September 29th  in the Friary.

Events next Sunday will be in the even ages but it will be a good run for those out of their age as their events will take place the following week at the same venue.
