Tramore Hosted First Cross Country of the Season
The first cross country races of the season was held on Sunday September 15th in Tramore. This was a very low key event to give newcomers a chance to stretch their legs before the county championships in two weeks time. Thirteen athletes from West Waterford braved the drizzle and wind to take part in the event.
First in action was Ayla Hogan in the girls under 9 and she put in a great run to finish in 6th place. There were two newcomers representing West Waterford in the under 9 boys race Conall O’Ruairc and Keelan Holland. Conall had a brilliant run to take second and Keelan sprinted to the end to claim the final individual medal.
Etain Ní Mhurchadha moved up an age to run with the under 11’s and came home in 9th place. In the boys race Liam Wilmott was in the leading bunch throughout the race and came home in 3rd place. In a sprint to the finish Jamie Kiely just missed out on an individual medal when he finished in 7th place just ahead of Andy Zakis in 8th.
In the boys under 13 there was a great battle for third place between two West Waterford athletes with Mario Zakis getting the better of Tiernan Hogan in the last few metres. Colm O’Muiri who was running a year out of age was next home in 6th place with newcomer Patrick Curren, who was running his first race in 8th place.
In the final race of the day Isabelle Gaffney and William McNally made a welcome come back to cross country running where they both finished 3rd in their races.
Well done to all our athletes and parents who braved the inclement weather to take part in the cross country.
