123.ie All Ireland Championships Derry
We made the long trek to Derry for Day 1 of the National Championships under 12, 14, 16 and 18. What should have been a relatively easy flat cross country course was turned into a mud bath by the very heavy rain on Saturday night and the showers on Sunday. The heavy conditions made the going very difficult for all the athletes young and old but our athletes put in their best performances as they represented club and county. Those who stayed to the end to support our senior athletes had a long dark and wet trek home.
Best performance on the day was from Maddie Connors who skipped lightly over the mud to finish 53rd in the under 14 girls. She was first home for the county team that finished in 5th place. Rachel Keogh also scored on the county team crossing the line in 110th place. In the under 12 girls race Etain Ní Mhutchadha improved on her run in Munster finishing 107th in her first All Ireland and was the fifth scoring member of the county team. In the under 16 race Natalie Barry made it in to the top 100 finishing 98th with Siún Cunningham also scoring on the county team in 128th place. In the under 18 girls race Fia De Paor finished in 38th place and was the seventh Munster girls home an improvement on her 11th place in the Munster Championships and Sarah o’Riordan also made it into the top 100 in avery strong and competitive race.
Tony’s League Concludes this week
After six weeks of tough competition the final run of our winter league will be held on Wednesday. This is a reverse order run with everyone going off at their fastest time. The run will be followed by the presentation of prizes in the Friary Gym and we invite all our parents to attend the prize giving. As well as the team prizes there are lots of individual prizes to present.
Munster Relays in Tramore next Sunday
West Waterford AC has twelve teams entered for next weekend’s Munster Relays in Tramore next Sunday. We did our best to accommodate everyone who expressed an interest in going. Check the parent’s app for details of the teams. It is important that everyone shows up for this event as if one is missing the team cant run and three people will have made a wasted journey.
