Silver for Boys under 13 Team at Munster Cross Country Championships
Riverstick was a tough venue for the Munster B Championships on Sunday last. At the best of times it is a tough course with a long 500m uphill to the finish but the rain of the past week made it even tougher as our young athletes had to plough through the muddy under foot conditions.
The under 13 boys put in a great team performance to take home the silver team medals. Daniel Curran has been improving with every race this year and he dug deep on Sunday to finish 10th claiming his first individual Munster medal. As well as leading the club to silver medals he also scored on the county team that finished 3rd. He was backed up by another solid run from Colm O’Muiri who finished 24th and also scored on the county team. Next came Liam Wilmott in 41st and Conor de Burca in his first appearance in the club vest finished 54th. Liam Hogan was next across the line in 62nd place and Jamie Kiely rounded off the team in 70th.
Sean Wilmott in his first Munster race put in a great run in the under 9 boys to finish 24th.
In the under 11 girls Rachel Curran finished 68th and Naoise de Burca in her first Munster race finished 80th.
In the under 11 boys race Cian O’Callaghan was the first West Waterford athlete to cross the line in 54th place with Eoin Breathnach in 66th and Deaglan Breathnach 71st.
In the girls under 15 race Sheelagh Curran was our only competitor and she continues to show an improvement with each outing finishing in 30th place.
In our final race of the day Aaron Connors who was competing in Munster competition for the first time finished 31st.
Well done to all the athletes, parents and club officials who travelled on the day.
All Ireland Day 1 in Derry Next Sunday
On Saturday next West Waterford athletes will head to Derry to compete in the National Championships. We are becoming very familiar with the trek north as this is our third trip in as many years with the championships previously held in North Donegal and Fermanagh. Seven athletes from West Waterford will compete at the event.
Fia de Paor will compete on the Munster and county team under 18 with Sarah O’Riordan also on the county team. Etain Ní Mhurchadha will compete in her first All Ireland cross country as part of the Waterford under 12 team. Rachel Keogh and Maddie Connors will make their All Ireland debut at these championships as they compete in the Waterford under 14 team and Natalie Barry and Siun Cunningham will compete as part of the Waterford under 16 team.
Inter Sport Elverys Tony’s League Continues to bring out the best in our Young Athletes
Despite the horrible weather conditions last Wednesday seventy eight athletes turned out to compete for their teams in our Winter League. In the wet heavy conditions it was difficult to improve times with just one athlete Michael O;Mahony managing to post an improved time taking 1 sec off his previous best. Tiarnan Hogan was fastest on the big lap with a time of 7.48 with Aadi Paniker 7.55 and Daniel Curran 7.59 the only other athletes under 8mins. Maddie Connors was the best of the girls in 8.12 just one second ahead of Natalie Barry. In the small lap Che O’h Artaigh 3.58 and Cian O’Callaghan 3.59 were the only ones to go under 4 mins with Sibeal Curran the best of the girls in 4.11. In the team race Natalie Barrys team continue to lead the way and have set a tough marker for anyone who wants to catch them. With some good team running on Wedneasday last Colm O’Muiri’s team have stayed in second ahead of Maddie Connors team in 3rd place and Tiarnan Hogna’s team is just behind in 4th place so it will all be decided next week.
Wednesday 19th will be the last day of the team running and on Wed 26th we will have the reverse order run followed by the prize giving in the Friary Gym. We would encourage all parents to attend the prize giving.
Juvenile Club AGM
The AGM of the juvenile club will in Minnies Bar on Tues Dec 2nd @8pm. We would like to see a large turnout of parents of our young athletes for this event.
