West Waterford Athlete Shine in Belfast and the RSC
The first sunny weekend this summer heralded some great performance by our young athletes at both ends of the country with our younger athletes competing in the Munster Championships and Isabelle Gaffney in action in the Irish Milers Club event in Belfast.
Another Great Run from Isabelle in Belfast
Isabelle made the long trip to Beslfast for the Irish Milers Club 800m and another chance to run a fast time. She was the youngest of the competitors in the A race but was undaunted by the competition and came with her trademark fast finish to claim 2nd place in a new personal best of 2.06.10. This means that Isabelle has now achieved the European under 18 standard twice. Five athletes have achieved the standard but only two will be selected and as it stands Isabelle has the fastest time of all five.
Great Results from Girls under 10 at 123.ieMunster Championships
WWAC had twelve girls competing at the 123.ie Munster Championships in the RSC Waterford last Saturday. Maddie Grant and Molly Fenton put up a great performance in the turbo javelin and with a combined score of over 19 mts took the bronze medal. Íde Ní Lonáin and Molly Fenton combined in the under 10 500m. Íde ran 1.44 and Molly 1.45 to secure the bronze team medals. Saoirse Keohan ran 1.55 and Maddie Grant 1.58.
In the long jump Taylor O’Leary jumped a huge 3.25 and Íde Ní Lonáin was also over 3m and their combined score saw them finished 4th just 10cms behind the third placed team. Mollaí Lonáin jumped 2m.64 and Saoirse Keohan jumped 2.53 Taylor was also the fastest WWAC athlete in the 60m running 10.29. Their relay team also finished in 4th place just behind Leevale AC from Cork
In the under 11 80m Aisling Ní Treasaigh was the fastest of the West Waterford girls running 10.15 with Ciara Kenny 10.43, Sibeal Curran 10.50 and Ayla Hogan 10.70. . In the long Jump Aisling and Ciara both jumped 3.07 with Ciara Crowe improving to 2.98 and Sadie Burke jumped 2.82.
Sibeal Curran was our fastest runner in the 600m running 2.04 with Ayla Hogan next in 2.11, Sadie Burke 2.18 and Ciara Crowe 2.19.
In the under 12 events Etain Ní Mhurchadha had a new pb in the shot throwing over 5m for the first time. In the 600m she ran 2.02 which was a 7 sec improvement on last year. Meabh Guiry was running in her first Munster Championships and recorded 2.29. In th long jump Etain jumped 3.36 and Meabh jumped 2.45.
Gold for Alex Whelan in High Jump
It was the turn of the boys to compete on Sunday and Alex Whelan got us off to a great start with a win in the under 12 boys high jump clearing 1.37. Alex also made it to the final of the 80m and the long Jump jumping over 3m90. Andy Zakis was also competing in the long jump where his best of 3m74. Was just 4cms short of qualifying for the final.
We had just two under 9 boys competing in their first Munster Championships Tadhg Guiry ran 12.4 for the 60m and 1.06 for the 300m. Dan O’Murchadha jumped 2.48 in the long jump and had a big pb in the turbo javelin throwing 14.83.
The under 11 boys had a busy day running jumping and throwing. In the Sprints Caleb Roche was fastest in 9.44 with Cian O’Callaghan 9.82, Deaglan Breathnach 9.85, Eoghan Breathnach 9.97, Seadhna O’Tuathaigh 10.35 and Micheal Guiry 10.44.
In the long jump Cillian O’Brien had the longest jump with 3m88. Rian Murray was next on 3.50. Tiarnach Costin jumped 3.30 and Eoghan Breathnach 3.24.
Cillian also threw longest in the turbo javelin with 18.30 next was Deaglán Breathnach 17.21, Caleb Roche13.51, Rian Murray 11.72 and Ché O’hArtaigh 10.76.
In the 600m Cian O’Callaghan was fastest in 2.03 just ahead of Tiarnach Costin 2.04. Ché and Seadhna both clocked 2.05 and Micheal Guiry cane home in 2.16.
Under 10 Boys Finish on a High with Relay Silver
There was some great running from the under 10 boys in the sprint and that was an indication they would be in the mix in the relay finals. Lochlen Murray ran 10.60, Cormac Breathnach 7.68, Liam Enright9.70, Ryan Gaffney 10.16 and Sean Wilmott 10.77. The combined times of Lachlen and Cormac saw them take the silver medal in the 60m team event. In the long jump Liam jumped 3.40 and Cormac one cm better in 3.41. Lachlann was fastest in the 500m in 1.37 with ryan 1.44 and Sean 1.50. In their final event of the day the second heat of the relay they had a great battle with Nenagh Olympic. West Waterford finished 2nd in what was the fastest head and took silver just one tenth of a second behind Nenagh and ahead of Ferrybank the winners of heat 1.
Bronze for Eve Apatira in Multi Events
Competing in her first Munster combined events championships Eve Apatira put in some very good performances in the hurdles, high jump and long jump to take bronze in the under 15 combined events. We had two other athletes trying combined events for the first time Eabha Broderick finished 7th overall and Daniel Curran finished 12th in the boys under 13 event.
Munster under 13 &14 Templemore Monday June 1st
We will have a small number of athletes in action in Templemore on Monday June 1st. Some of the events for under 13 and 14 eg 200, 1500, walk discus will be on in Cork later in June but they must still be entered by today.
Club Championships Starting on June 3rd
Now that we are coming to the end of a very successful Primary School Sports with the last in the series the finals for Big Schools on Thursday night it is time to turn our attention to the club championship which will get underway on Wed June 3rd and continue on Monday and Wednesday at training times for the month of June. There will be sprints, middle distance, throwing and jumping events for all age groups.
