West Waterford Athletes Shine at 123.ie Munster Schools Championships.
Many of our secondary school athletes were in action at the 123.Munster Schools Championships in Castleisalnd Co Kerry last Saturday. Heavy rain at the start of the day gave way to blustery conditions which made it difficult to achieve personal best performances. West Waterford athletes representing St Augustines and Dungarvan CBS showed they could compete with and hold their own with the best in Munster.
Munster Titles Eabha, Isabelle, Mario and Noah
Despite the difficulty of the blustery wind knocking over hurdles Eabha Broderick had a clean race over the hurdles to take the Minor Girls Title in a very fast 12.76, her first win at Munster level. Isabelle Gaffney continued her good vein of form with a well timed finishing sprint to take the Inter Girls 800m title in 2m12. Noah Commins moved up to the senior ranks for the first time and made a great run over the last 200m to outkick his rivals and take the Senior Boys 1500m title in 4m40. In the field events Mario Zakis moved up an age to compete in the junior boys javelin. With each round he improved his distance and threw over 30m for the first time, winning the event with a throw of 31.08m.
Silver for Siún, Michalina, and Mario
Siún Cunningham was another to make it on to the podium for the first time at a Munster Schools event when she finished second in the Inter Girls Steeplechase in a time of 5m51. Michalina Goclick threw out a great throw in the last round of the Inter Girls Discus. Her distance of 29m.87 moved her from 4th to 2nd place in the competition. In the Minor shot Mario Zackis added a silver medal to the gold he won in the javelin with a throw of 10m10. In the same competition Dylan O’Leary representing Dungarvan CBS finished 5th with only six centimetres separating 3rd, 4th and 5th. Dylan moved up an age group to compete in the junior Discus where he finished 5th with personal best throw of 23m.15.
Bronze for Kasey and Matilda
St Augustine’s teams took bronze in both the Junior Girls and Inter Girls Relays.
Matilda Mattuzi was a member of the junior girls team and Kasey Connors was a member of the inter girls team that secured the bronze medals.
123.ie Munster under 9-12 Championships in Waterford Next Weekend
Next Saturday and Sunday it will be the turn of our younger athletes to compete at Munster level. The journey to the RSC will be a much shorter one for our athletes and their parents so we hope to see a big turnout in the RSC over the two days.
Primary School Sports a Huge Success
Last Thursday night saw the first of three nights of Primary School with the heats of the big schools. Eleven schools were in action with all the young athletes seeking to qualify for the Western Finals. I t was a great night of sport run off efficiently thanks to the help of the many volunteers who turn up every year to help run the event. Athletes and parents came in plenty of time so there was no issue with traffic and parking.
Next Thurs May 21st will be the Western Finals for small schools and we would again urge people to arrive before 6 to avoid causing a traffic backlog.
