Another Good Day at the County Championships

West Waterford AC had over thirty athletes competing at last weekend’s county championships. Day 2 on the track was mainly about hurdles and many of our younger athletes including Richard Ahearn, Billy O’Riordan, Andy Zakis,Rian Flavin, Isobel Daly, Colm O’ Muiri, Eoghan Kenny, Mario Zakis, Peter Ahearn and Sarah O’Riordan all made it through to their finals. In the finals Lochlann Hurney finished 3rd under 13, as did Lauren Cliffe under 16. Olan Devereaux was 2nd under 12, Fergus Donnolly was 2nd under 13, Isabelle Gaffney was 2nd under 14 and Jarlath Hurney had a fine win in the boys under 11.

Next up were the 200m and we had lots of athletes competing and there were some very big field in the younger age groups. Andy Zakis 5th under 9 and Rian Flavin 5th under 10 were the fastest of the younger athletes. Jarlath had another win in the 200m under 11 and Olan Devereaux was 2nd under 12 with Mario Zakis just missing out on a medal finishing 4th.

Fergus Donnolly had a good win in the under 13 boys 200m with Isabelle Gaffney taking another silver medal in the girls under 14.

Clean Sweep for West Waterford in under 16 Girls 800m

It was a good day for the club in the middle distance events with wins for Fia de Paor and Noah Commins in the under 16 events. The under 16 girls won all three medals with gold for Fia, silver for Lauren Cliffe and bronze for Sarah O’Riordan. Isabelle won her third silver medal of the day finishing 2nd in the 800m under 14.

Wins for Sophie and Doireann in the Race Walking

Sophie Beresford won her first county title with a very good performance in the under 14 race walk and Neveah Cairns in her first attempt at race walking finished 3rd. Doireann Hickey continued her winning ways with a win in the youths 3000m walk. Eabha Hickey moved up an age to compete in the youths event where she finished 3rd. Also in the youth category Grainne Moore finished 2nd in the 3000m.

Wins for Olan Devereaux and Fergus Donnolly in Jumping Events

There was plenty to cheer about for our athletes in the field events with a win for Olan Devereaux in the High Jump under 12. In the under 13 event Peter Ahern was 2nd and Fergus Donnolly 3rd. Fergus donnolly had another win in the long jump under 13 with Peter Ahearn 3rd . In the girls under 16 Lauren Cliffe jumped over 4m to take the bronze medal.

Wins for Mario Zakis and Lochlann Hurney in the Shot

Mario Zakis had a good win in the boys under 12 shot while Lochlann Hurney won the boys under 13 but not far behind him was Darren Doherty who won silver competing in his first county championships.

Saoirse Quinn was 2nd in the girls discus throwing close to 30m.

The final events of the day were the relays and in the boys under 10 team were Jamie Kiely, Richard Ahearn, Andy Zakis and Rian Flavin. Rian put in a storming last leg to bring the team home in 3rd place.

It was a very tight finish in the boys under 12 with only the width of a jersey separating the top three teams. After the judge’s deliberations West Waterford team of Eoghan Kenny, Mario Zakis, Olan Devereaux and Jarleth Hurney were awarded 2nd place.

In the girls under 12 the team of Isobel Daly, Katie Mai Daly,Eile de Paor and Amy Cosgrave were again this week up against some very strong opposition and finished just outside the medals in 4th place.

Club Championships Start on Wed May 10th

Our annual club championships will get underway on Wednesday next May 10th starting with the sprint events for all ages. The championships will be held over the next four Wednesdays with everyone competing in a sprint. Middle distance run, long jump and a throwing events. Points will be awarded for every performance and trophies awarded at the end of the championship.

We are looking for help from parents for the club championships so if you can hold a tape or rake a long jump pit please come along and help.

East Munster Boys in RSC on Thursday

Last week the girls competed at the East Munster girls championships in Templemore and this week the boys will compete on Thursday in the RSC. They will be looking to finish in the top three and qualify for the Munster Championships later in the month. Best of luck to all the athletes from the local schools competing in this event.
