WWAC under 10 Boys are 123.ie All Ireland Relay Champions
It was a day to remember for 4 young athletes from West Waterford as they competed in their first All Ireland Championships and came away with a win. The 4 boys Ryan Gaffney, Liam Enright, Cormac Breathnach and Lachlen Murray qualified for the championships by finishing second in the Munster Championships. Over the past few weeks they have put in a lot of practise on their baton changeovers and it paid off on Sunday. Munster champions Ferrybank won the first heat in 62.39. The West Waterford AC team were in heat 2 running in lane 7. Ryan blasted out of the blocks and with smooth baton changing to Liam and Cormac, Lachlen crossed the line in 61.63 a new personal best time for the team and almost 3secs faster than they ran in Munster. A super performance all round.
Personal Bests at All Ireland Championships
All our athletes competing at the weekend put in some great performance. First in action were Maddie Grant and Molly Fenton in the Turbo Javelin and they added almost two metres to their personal best with both throwing over 10m for a combined score of 20m.63. Ide Ni Lonáin and Molly Fenton recorded personal bests in a very competitive 500m race. Ide knocked a second off her time to run under 1m40 for the first time and Molly recorded 1.42 a three second improvement on her Munster performance. There were also personal best times for Lachlen Murray and Cormac Breathnach in the 60m sprint as Lachlen dipped under 9.60 for the first time and Cormac also recorded his best time of 9.53.
Alex Whelan was very close to the medals in the under 12 high jump. This was only Alex’s second high jump competition ever and he cleared the bar at 1m33. He came close to clearing 1.36 which was the bronze medal height.
Well done to all our athletes and coaches who represented the club so well last weekend.
123.ie All Ireland Under 13-19 Championships
Next weekend its back to Tullamore for Day 1and 2 of the national championships for out older athletes. On Saturday Isabelle Gaffney will be in action in the 400m and will look to maintain the good form she showed at the recent Munster Championships. In the afternoon Michelina Goclik will also be looking to maintain the good form she showed in the recent Munster Championships.
On Sunday Aisling Hickey is up first @12.30 in the girls under 14 walk. From 2pm on West Waterford will have 4 athletes competing in the 800m Isabelle Gaffney and Siún Cunningham will compete in the girls under 17, Shauna Deevy in the girls under 18 and Noah Commins in the boys under 18. These will be very competitive races with heats and finals on the same day.
Clean Sweep for Alex Whelan and Maddie Connors in Club Championships.
For the first time ever we had over one hundred young athletes competing in our club championships. This event was run at training time over the past three weeks. Every one competed in 3 races sprint, middle distance and distance race as well as long jump and turbo javelin for under 11 and shot for under 12 up.
The results were converted into points and based on the results trophies were presented at training last Monday night. Photos of the presentation will be in next weeks papers
Only 2 athletes scored the maximum 50 points Alex Whelan in the under 12 boys and Maddie Connors in the over 14 girls. Others to come close were Lachlen Murray (47), Ide Ní Lonáin (45) and Etain Ní Mhurchadha (44).
Siún Cunningham Competes on Munster Team
The Tailteann Games which is a schools inter provincial championships took place in Carlow last weekend. West Waterford had just one representative on the girls team as Siún Cunningham ran in the 1500m steeplechase in 5.54. The Munster girls team managed by West Waterfords Mary Ashe won the overall trophy for the third year in a row.
