First Munster Medal for Olan Devereaux

The final cross country fixture of the season was held in Clarecastle Co Clare on Sunday. Conditions were far from ideal for cross country running with rock hard frosty ground underfoot and also freezing fog to contend with. Two young hardy athletes from West Waterford made the trip to compete in the Munster B championships under 11.

First in action was Ruth Walsh in the girls under 11 race. Ruth has made great progress this year especially running the 2000m in Tony’s league where she was a scoring member of the winning team. Ruth finished in 13th place just one place off an individual medal and a big improvement on her 54th place in the A championships.

Olan Devereaux was next to run and he too made light work of the tough conditions coming home in 7th place to win his first Munster medal. Olan was also a member of the winning team in our recent winter league getting his time for the 2000m under 8mins and this steady winter running stood to him when he ran over the shorter 1000m route on Sunday. This run was a big improvement on his 51st place at the recent A championships.

Well done to both athletes and their parents who made the trip to Clare last weekend.

We wish all our athletes, coaches, mentors and their families a relaxing and happy Christmas and we look forward to seeing our secondary school athletes back in action in the schools cross country which starts with the Waterford Schools cross country on Thurs Jan 19th in St Augustine’s College
