Good Turnout for Day 1 of the County Championships
Despite the many other events taking place on Sunday April 26th there was a very good turnout for the Waterford County Athletic Championships in the RSC.
West Waterford had almost fifty athletes competing in running jumping and throwing. It was great to see some of our newer athletes competing in their first county championships.
13 Individual Titles for West Waterford Athletes
Mario Zakis won four individual titles in the Javelin, Discus, 250m hurdles and the 100m sprint.
There was also gold for sisters Kasey and Maddie Connors in the youths 300m hurdles and the under 15 250m hurdles.
In the sprint events Liam Enright won the under 10 and added the gold to the under 9 he won last year.
Caleb Roche under 11 crossed the line in first place to win his first county title.
Alex Whelan competing in the high jump for the first time took gold with a jump of 1.28.
In the 1500m races Tiarnan Hogan( under 14), Shauna Deevy (youths) and Súin Cunningham (junior) all won their 1500m event.
Aisling Hickey was our only walker in action and she won the girls under 14 race.
Silver medals were won by Molly Fenton in the under 10 turbo javelin,
Tiarnan Hogan under 14 80m sprint,
Ava Kiely in the under 16 shot and 100m,
Dylan O’Leary under 15 discus,
Eve Apatttira competing in her first county championships finished 2nd in the under 15 100m.
In the under 10 turbo javelin Maddie Grant finished 3rd as did Rian Murray in the boys under 11 long jump,
Alex Whelan in the under 12 80m and Kasey Connors in the youths 100m.
There was some very good long jumping from the boys under 11 as well as bronze for Rian Murray with a jump of 3.58 Cillian O’Brien, Tiarnach Costin and Seadhna O’Thuathaigh all jumped over 3m and all finished in the top eight.
In the relays both under 11 boys teams finished in the medals with the team of Deaglan Breathnach, Cillian O’Brien, Rian Murray and Caleb Roche finishing second and the team of Eoghan Breathnach, Tiarnach Costin, Cian O’Callaghan and Seadhna O Thuathaigh taking the bronze medal.
It was also bronze for the girls under 15 team of Maddie, Eve, Matilda and Blaithin in their 4x100m relay.

East Munster Girls in RSC on Wednesday
Next up for our older athletes is the East Munster Schools Championships with the girls competing on Wed 29th in the RSC and the boys on Thursday 7thin Templemore. Both events start at 11am and will see schools athletes from schools all over Waterford and Tipperary competing for places in the Munster Schools in Castleisland. The top three in each event will qualify for the Munster Championships
