Big Turn Out for First Night of Club Championships

 

Over sixty young athletes turned up to compete at the first round of the club championships which was held on Wed last. First up were the sprints for under 9,10,11,12,13,14 and over 14’s. There were some great individual battles and on more than one occasion the camera had to be called on decide the placings. In the under 9 long jump Madeline Curran had a great jump of 2m 83 beating all the boys as well as the girls. Sinead Donnolly was 2nd with 2.42 and Eadaoin Houlihan 3rd with 2.36. Both Evan Radley and Charlie Ahearn jumped over 2.50 for first and second in the boys event with Alex Dempsey third with 2.38. In the over 14 Long Jump Grainne Moore had a huge leap of 4m50 to win.

The under 10 boys and girls also competed in the Turbo javelinwith Jarleth Hurney recording the best throw of 11m40. Jamie Cliffe was 2nd with 10m30 and Tiernan Hogan 3rd with 9m70. Best of the girls was Isobel Daly with a throw of 7m20 with Ellie Mae Doherty 2nd with 6m30 and Ava Burkin 3rd with 5m50.

 

Next Wednesday we continue with 200m  for under 9,10 and 11, 300m for under 12 and 13 and 400m for under and over 14’s. There will also be long jump for under 13 and 14’s and turbo javelin for under 11’s.

 

Silver for Saoirse Quinn at Munster Junior Championships

 

Saoirse Quinn took her first steps into senior athletics when she competed at the Munster Junior(under 20) championships last Sunday. Competing in the discus, Saoirse found the discus circle very slippery but a change of shoes before the last round saw her throw 27m.67 and secure a silver medal.

 

Irish Life Health Irish Schools Championships next Saturday

 

Next weekend will be the biggest event on the schools athletics calendar as athletes travel from all four provinces who qualified from their Provincial Championships will assemble in Tullamore for the Irish LifeHealth Irish Schools Championship. All the local schools Ard Scoil na nDeise, Blackwates CS, CBS Dungarvan, Meanscoil san Nioclas and St Augustine’s will have athletes involved and we wish them all the best of luck in this competition.

Munster Childrens Games under 9,10,11 and Individual Championships under 12 and 13

 

The Munster Championships for all the above age groups will take place in Templemore Co Tipperary on the weekend of June 11th and 12th. All the details and the timetable are on the munsterathletics website. If you would like your child to compete at this event please contact me this week so they can be entered in time.
