Club Championships Start on Wednesday 25 th
Our plan to start the club championships were scuppered by the weather last
Wednesday. We don’t normally cancel training when it rains but the torrential
downpours that hit between 5pm and 6.30 would have made it very difficult to
run the championship so next Wednesday sees the return of our club
championships. The championships will be held over 4 Wednesdays in May and
June and will be run off at training time. All our athletes will compete in
running jumping and throwing events with points being awarded for each event.
At the end of the four weeks the points will be added together and the winners
presented with their trophies. It is good to see the club championships back in
full swing after a lapse of three years. We did manage a curtailed version last
year within the pod system but this year we can run the full championship. This
will be a chance for our new athletes to compete in a relaxed atmosphere. We
start next Wednesday night with the sprint event for everyone. Looking forward
to seeing you all ready to compete on Wed night. We ask that all our athletes
arrive a few minutes early on Wed so we are ready to start at 6pm.

As there will be running jumping and throwing events on each night we will be
looking for help from parents recording and measuring the various events. So if
you can hold a pen or a tape please come along any of the nights you are
available. You do not have to commit to doing all four nights.
Munster Schools Championships in Templemore
Over the past number of weeks our club athletes have been competing for their
schools Ardscoil na nDéise, Dungarvan CBS, Dungarvan College, Meanscoil
san Nioclas and St Augustine’s College at the Waterford and East Munster
Schools Championships. They have enjoyed considerable success, with many
qualifying through to the Munster Schools Championships that were held in
Templemore last Saturday.
Doireann Ní hÍci (Meanscoil )confirmed her status as one of the country’s
finest walkers with an impressive win in the Inter girl’s 2000m walk. Saoirse
Quinn (St Augustine’s) continues to make progress in the hammer and discus
and made the podium in both events finishing second in the discus and third in
the hammer. One of our newest recruits to the club Noah Commins (St
Augustine’s) finished 2 nd in the Minor 800m. David Fahey Conway (St
Augustine’s) in his first season throwing finished 3 rd in the junior boys discus.
In the senior girls Sarah Slevin ( Ardscoil na nDéise) finished 3 rd in both the
shot and discus. Eabha Hickey ( Dungarvan College) had a very good walk in
the junior girls 1500m breaking the 7min mark and finishing 4 th in a very
competitive race. Clodagh Cunningham was also a member of the St
Augustine’s junior relay team that also finished 4 th . Naoise Mac Mhurchadha
was also unlucky as having made the trip to Templemore he was unable to
compete because of illness. Well done to all our athletes who competed on the
day. We look forward to seeing those who finished in the top three competing
in the Irish LifeHealth All Ireland Schools in Tullamore on Sat June 4 th .
Club Gear /Shop
The senior club have opened a club shop online for West Waterford AC club
leisure clothing in adult and children sizes. All the details are on their facebook
page and the shop will only be open for a short time. Please note that this is
leisure wear and when competing the athlete must wear their club singlet which
is available in Elverys.
