Cross Country Season Gets Underway

The first meet of the cross country season took place on Sunday last. A very well organised event run by St Senan’s AC which saw twenty one athletes from West Waterford competing against clubs from Waterford and south Leinster. Many of our younger athletes were competing for the first time.

Win for Jarlath Hurney in the under 9 Boys

First up were the under 9 boys and girls races.  Isabelle Daly was our only runner in the girls event and she came home in 8th place. In the boys Jarleth Hurney had a great run in his first race to win the under 9 boys . In the under 10 girls Ruth Walsh finished 3rd with Alicia Radley 6th . Katie Mai Daly was next home in 15th closely followed by Grace Hodge. In the boys race there was also a 3rd place finish for Dan Moynihan with David Dempsey in 11th.

Isabelle Gaffney wins under 12 Race

Isabelle Gaffney got her season off to a winning start with a win in the under 12 race. Rosie Berryman finally got a chance to compete for West Waterford and finished 7th. Ciara O’Donovan  moved up from the under 11’s and finished in 47th place. Our under 11 boys moved up an age group to compete under 12. First home was Charlie Curran in 9th followed by Fergus Donnelly 12th  and Cathal McKenna 30th just ahead of Lochlann Hurney 31st and Peter Ahearne 33rd.

Team Title for under 14 Girls

We have a very strong group of girls under 14 and they won their first team title on Sunday last. They were led home by Sarah Gaffney in 5th closely followed by Aoife O’Donovan 7th  and Kyla Flavin 8th with Ami Flavin 13th the fourth scoring member of the team. We had just one athlete competing in the under 16 girls Claudia O’Halloran finished in 17th place.

Well done to all who competed and the parents who were there to support them on the day.

County Championships next Sunday in Carriganore

The first session of the county championships under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 will take place on Sunday next in Carriganore. We hope for a big turnout of athletes as we would like to field teams in every age group. Athletes can move up an age group for this event so the under 9’s will run with the under 10;s and under 11’s with under 12’s all  the way up. It will be good practice for those who are out of their age. As soon as I have the inline entry details I will email them out to everyone. WE will meet at 10am in Carriganore to warm up for the races.
