West Waterford Athletic Club Juvenile Notes

Munster Schools XCounty Title for Lucy Holmes

On Thursday last our athletes made the long trek to Clarecastle to represent their schools in the IrishLifeHealth Munster Schools Cross Country Championships. It had rained heavily on Wed night and that combined with the rain earlier in the week meant the course was very soft with a few very wet patches. Thursday was a bright and sunny day with a strong wind making things feel cool but Clare escaped the heavy rain that fell in many parts of Munster that day.

It was a very good day for the Ard Scoil athletes with Lucy Holmes putting in a storming last 300m to move up from 4th and cross the line first to win the senior girls race, her second Munster Schools Cross Country Title.  Lucy last won a Munster schools cross country title back in 2016 when she won the junior girls race. This is Lucy’s last year in school and so to finish her Munster s Cross Country season with a win was the icing on the cake. Mary Kate Prendergast had a good run to finish 22nd with West Waterford’s Elia Tutty in 36th. The Ard Scoil team just missed out on a qualifying place finishing 4th just 3pts behind Waterpark the third placed team.

In the senior boys race Oisin O’Riordan Dungarvan CBS battling a heavy cold gave his all and finished 17th just outside the top 15 who qualify for the All Ireland.

Individual Medal for Sarah Nyhan in Inter Girls

Sarah Nyhan had her best run for the Ard Scoil when she finished 5th in a very competitive intermediate girl’s race. Last year Sarah finished 9th and continues to improve each year.  Caoimhe Prendergast made the step up from junior to intermediate this year and finished 19th. They were both members of the Ard Scoil team that finished 3rd and qualified for the All Ireland.

Other West Waterford athletes who competed on the day were Cal Tutty 23rd and Ian Holmes 39th both Dungarvan CBS and Tadhg O’Sullivan 61st and David Horgan 79th both St Augustines all of whom competed in the junior boy’s event.

In the junior girls race Cathy Ní Sheanlaoich had her best run ever finishing in 26th place and there were three more West Waterford athletes competing for St Augustines in this race Angelina Chizhikova 36th Grainne Moore 37th  and Fiona O’Riordan 48th.

In the Minor boys Darrah O’Regan put in a storming run to lead home the CBS team Darragh finished 19th not far off the individual qualifiers and David Nyhan finished 26th.  Competing for St Augustines Daniel Coonan finished 83rd with Mark O’Donovan 87th and Mattie Mullaney 88th.
