Tailteann Medal for Doireann Hickey
The Tailteann Inter Provincial Championships were held at the national stadium in Santry last Saturday. This was the first schools championship that was held since the pandemic took hold in March 2020. The best under 17 school going athletes from the four provinces competed at this event. First up were the race walking championships. Doireann Hickey Meanscoil san Nioclas represented Munster. Aisling Lane of Connacht raced into an early lead and held it all the way to the tape to take the gold medal. Leinster’s Ciara Wilson Bowen also opened up a gap on the rest of the field with Doireann tracking the second Leinster and Connacht athletes. As the race progressed Ciara Mooney of Leinster and Doireann began to up the pace and overhauled Ciara Wilson Bowen to take the silver and bronze medals respectively. Doireann was very happy with her performance which saw her walk 30secs faster than she did in last week’s Munster trials. After the event Doireann was selected as first reserve on the Irish team. She is young enough to compete at this event again next year.
Sarah Slevin Ardscoil na nDeise was the only other West Waterford athlete to make the Munster team competing in both the Shot and the Discus. Sarah finished 8th in the shot with a throw on 9m35. In the discus Sarah couldn’t reach the heights she did last week when she broke her personal best three times and finished 8th with a throw of 23.00. On a positive note Sarah was the second placed Munster girls in the competition improving from her third place in the trial.
