Busy Days Ahead for West Waterford Athletes

On Thursday next many of our athletes will head to Clarecastle County Clare to compete in the IrishLifeHealth Munster Schools Cross Country Championships.

Our athletes will be representing their local schools and will be looking for individual and team honours as well as qualifying places for the All Ireland. As always competition will be stiff and everyone will have to be in top form to make it through to the All Irelands.

First in action will be Dungarvan CBS minor boys team that won in East Munster. It looks like they will be without their top scorer David Gaffney on Thursday so will struggle to qualify as a team but David Nyhan who had a fine run in the East Munster should qualify as an individual. St Augustine’s have teams in the minor boys and junior boys and girls and their best chance of qualifying a team should be the junior girl’s team led by Angelina Chizhikova.

The Ard Scoil will field strong teams in both the inter and senior girls races led by Sarah Nyhan and Lucy Holmes and should be in the frame when the medals are handed out.  Oisin O’Riordan ,Cal Tutty and Ian Holmes all CBS and Mark Blackwell Meanscoil all compete as individuals and will be chasing a top 15 spot to qualify for the All Irelands .

Munster Indoor Championships in Nenagh

The second day of the Munster Indoor Championships takes place in Nenagh on Saturday next. This weekend it will be the turn of the walkers to take to the track. West Waterford has just one athlete in action Doireann Ní hÍcí in the girls under 15 1km walk. Doireann has been working well all winter under the guidance of Suzanna Costin has made great strides in the walk event and while she would prefer a longer distance she will be looking to get among the medals on Saturday.
