Munster Tailteann Trials Templemore

A  trial to select a Munster Schools team for the Tailteann Games took place in Templemore on Sat Sept 4th . This was for athletes aged under 17 on Sept 1st 2021.  West Waterford had two medal winners in action Doireann ní hÍci (Meanscoil san Nioclas) in the 3000m walk and Sarah Slevin (Ard Scoil na nDeise) in the shot and discus.

Doireann was first in action in the walk and she covered the distance in 17.0223. This was the first time Doireann had walked 3000m in competition and she finished strongly to take the gold medal.

Sarah was next up in the shot and a throw of 9.62 earned her the silver medal. There was a great competition in the girl’s discus with the placings changing several times in the course of the five rounds. Sarah improved her personal in three of her throws to finish on a best of 26.02 more than a metre further than her best in the Munster Championships a few weeks ago and finished in 3rd place with less than a metre separating the top three who all recorded personal best throws.

Doireann and Sarah will represent Munster in the Tailteann Games in Santry next Saturday where they will compete against teams from Leinster, Ulster and Connaught. The top two in each event will be selected to represent Ireland at the  SIAB school international at the end of the month.

Cross Country Training

In preparation for the upcoming cross country season our athletes started back training last Wednesday. This year we are hoping for a more normal cross country season with the counties getting underway at the end of Sept and the beginning of October. We have the potential to line out some very strong teams this year so it is important that all our athletes are back training this week. There will be a virtual county AGM on Tues night and we should have all the dates for the cross country season then. I will post them on the website as soon as I have them
