Juvenile News 05 July 2022

After four weeks of great competition our club championships concluded with the presentation of prizes. We were a week later than planned because we had to cancel one night because of severe thunderstorms. Some of our athletes had already gone on holidays by the time of the presentation so they can collect their trophies and medals at training over the next few Wednesdays. Five athletes scored full points Madeline Curran, Jarleth Hurney, Nicole Cullinane, Rosie Berryman and Rory Donnolly.  The biggest field was in the girls under 10 with thirteen athletes competing and the closest contest was in the boys under 11 with just one point separating the top two. Well done to all who competed over the four weeks

All Ireland Championships Day 1

Day one of the All Ireland Championships took place in Tullamore last weekend and West Waterford AC had two athletes qualified Paul Mullarkey and Saoirse Quinn. It was great to see Paul back in action again at this level as he was out of action for over a year with a serious knee injury. Paul threw 10.13 on his second throw to secure his place in the final 8 and earn three more throws. He finished on his best throw of 10m18.

Saoirse Quinn has been throwing very well over the last two weekend and on Sat she improved on her performance in the Munster championship with a best throw of 35m31 for 5th place.

Well done to both athletes for representing their club at highest level of the championships.

All Ireland Day 2 and 3

Next weekend we will see five West Waterford athletes in action over the two days.  On Sat the walkers will be off early @10am and the club will be represented by Eabha Hickey under 16 and Doireann Hickey under 17.

In the field events Saoirse Quinn will compete in the Discus @11.30 and David Conroy Fahey in the Hammer @3pm.

On Sunday Saoirse will be back in action again in the Shot@10am while David competes in the Discus @ 1.30.

On the track Noah Commins competes in his first All Ireland in the under 14 1500m @11.30.

Everyone should arrive at least one hour before their event to give themselves time to warm up properly and also in case the programme moves ahead of schedule.
