Day 2 of the county championships dawned bright and clear as we made our way to Tramore Racecourse for the unevenage county championships. We had a very disappointing turnout for day 2 with only twenty seven athletes making the trip to Tramore. Those who were there put in sterling performances for the club but it was a pity we didn’t have a few more as we lost out team prizes in three age groups for the lack of one athlete. We also had to say goodbye to the overall cup which the club had held for the last three years as first time winners Tramore finished five points ahead of WWAC in the overall standings.
First County Title for Girls under 9
WWAC’s girls under 9 team were first in action and though our numbers were small they gave everything they had on a tough course and came away with the county title. Ayla Hogan won her first individual county medal finishing 3rd and not far behind was Rachel Curran in 7th. Both Sibeal Curran and Sadie Burke had much better runs this week as they finished 9th and 14th. Well done girls on winning your first county title.
Individual Medal for Che O’hArtaigh
We had three under 9 boys in action and Che O’hArtaigh made light of the hilly conditions to sprint home in second place. There were also strong finishes for Caleb Roche 5th and Conor Queally 6th and it was a pity they did not have a fourth runner as they would certainly have taken the county title if they had.
It was a very long and hilly 1500m for the under 11 boys and girls and even though they had no teams they all put in a big effort. Ethain Ní Mhurchadha 4th was the best of the girls with an improved Kenzie Connors 13th and Robyn Lake in her first outing with the club 22nd. In the boys Liam Wilmott was first home in 7th place with Daniel Curran just three places back in 10th and Jamie Kiely 14th.
Silver Team Prizes for Boys and Girls under 13
Both the boys and girls under 13 fielded teams of four and both finished second in the team races. First home for the girls in 8th place was Leah Kiely closely followed by Maddie Connors in 9th and Rachel Keogh 10th . Eile de Paor completed the scoring four when she finished in 14th place. In the boys race Tiernan Hogan put in another fine perfonmance to finish 3rd and there was also good running from Kevin Russell in 5th. Com O’Muiri had a much better run this week and finished 7th. Tomas Higgins was running in his first cross country race this season was out of his age and running longer than he had run before but he stuck to his task and his 14th place finish ensured the silver medals for the team.
Bronze for Girls under 15 Team
There were just three athletes to score in the girls under 15 race and with three athlete West Waterford took the third team prize. Suin Cunningham had her best run ever to finish 6th and Natalie Barry was not far behind in 7th. Isobel Gaffney 10th completed the team.
County Titles for Fia de Paor and Naoise Mac Mhurchadha
There were good wins for Fia de Paor in the under 17 girls and Naoise MacMhurchadha in the under 19th boys with Sarah O’Riordan finishing 5th in the under 17 girls.
Well done to all our athletes who competed on the day and represented your club with pride and determination.
