6 County Titles for West Waterford AC Juvenile Athletes at Day1 of the County Cross Country Championships
Sunday last dawned clear and bright and the county championships that had been postponed due to the heavy rain the week before went ahead in glorious sunshine. Day one was the even ages and WWAC claimed 5 individual titles and one team title. Tiernan Hogan took his first county title winning the boys under 12 race and he was followed by William Mc Nally in the under 14 boys, Naoh Commins in the under 16 boys and Naoise MacMhurchadha in the under 18 boys. Fia de Paor was the only girl to claim and individual title and she was followed home by Sarah O’Riordan in second place. There was also a second place for Etain Ní Mhurchadha in the girls under 10 and an individual bronze for Andy Zakis in the under 10 boys race.
Boys under 12 Claim County Title
The boys under 12 took the county team title with Tiarnan Hogan leading the way in first place followed by Liam Wilmott 5th , Paidi O’Dheagh 10 and Colm O’Muiri 11th. The boys under 10 team finished 2nd with the scoring four of Andy Zakis, Conall O’Ruairc , Che O’hArtaigh and Billy O’Riordan. The under 12 girls of Ellie Mai Doherty, Leah Kiely, Rachel Keogh and Isobel Daly finished 2nd as did the under 14 girls with the scoring four being Saoirse Kinsella, Natalie Barry, Eabha Broderick and Ava Kiely. The under 14 boys of William McNally, Kevin Russell and Nathan Butler finished second to Tramore in their race. There were third place finishes for the girls under 10 team with Etain Ní Mhurchadha, Ayla Hogan, Sarah Moynihan and Rachel Curran the scoring four. The boys under 10 also added a set of bronze medals to the clubs tally on the day with Jude Lavin, Cillian O’Brien, Conor Queally and Caleb Roche the scoring members of the team. We had just two girls competing under 16 where Isabel Gaffney finished 5th and Siún Cunningham came home in 8th place.
WWAC was delighted to see almost 50 athletes competing for the club on the day with many of our younger athletes competing in their first county championships
Well done to all who took part on the day. At the end of day 1 in the overall standings for the Babs Keating Cup West Waterford have a very slight lead over Waterford AC and Ferrybank who are tied on second place.
Day 2 of the County Championships on Sunday next Oct 13th in Tramore
Tramore racecourse in the venue for next Sunday’s county championships under 9,11,13,15,17 and 19. WWAC would like to see a full turnout of all our athletes for this event and it will also be a chance to run over the course where the Munster championships will be held later in November.
Tony’s League to Start on Wednesday October 16th @4.30
For many of our athletes the highlight of the cross country season is our annual Tony’s league. This will take place at training time on Wednesdays and will be run over seven weeks. The first two trial dates are Wed 16th and Wed 23rd and you must run on at least one of these dates to make the teams for the team competition over the next four weeks
