Gold for Aisling Hickey and Sophie Beresford @Munster Indoor Championships
West Waterford A.C. was delighted to have six athletes in action at the Munster Indoor Championships last weekend. Five of our young athletes were competing for the first time at an indoor event.
On Saturday Kenzie and Madison Connors and Eabha Broderick travelled to Nenagh to compete in their first indoor championships. First up were the hurdles with Kenzie running 13.76 under 12. Eabha ran 10.71 and Madison ran 11.16 and both qualified for the under 14 semi finals. Eabha came very close to a place in the final missing out by just one tenth of a second.
In the 60m there were 11 heats and Eabha and Madison both qualified for the semi final, with Eabha running a best time of 9.01 in the semi final. Both girls finished 3rd in their heats of the 800m with Madison fastest this time in 2.48.2 and Eabha 2.49.4. Kenzie also finished 3rd in her heat of the under 12 600m in 2.18.
On Sunday Aisling Hickey continued the Costin walking tradition with a win in the girls under 13 1000m in 6.12.77. Sophie Beresford last years under 15 champion moved up to the under 16 1500 and also brought home a gold medal in a winning time of 7.56.50.
Colm O’Muiri was our other newcomer on the day and he recorded 9.80 in the 60m, 12.57 in the hurdles and 3.30 in the long jump.
Well done to all six athletes and their parents who travelled to Nenagh over the weekend.
Good Turn Out for Training on First Day Back
We had over sixty athletes up and running at our first full club training session last Wednesday. It was great to see such a big group enjoying their running throwing and jumping. This season we are trying Monday instead of Friday as our second day as numbers on Friday were much smaller over the last couple of seasons. We hope for as big a turn out on Mondays.
