Success for West Waterford Athletes at St Senan’s Open Sports

Several of our young athletes headed to Kilmacow on Easter Monday for the St Senan’s Open Sports. Ruby Stockwell in her last outing with the club won the high jump with a new pb of 1.61. Ruby and her family have moved to Waterford so Ruby has moved to city club Ferrybank AC and we wish her the best in her new club. Ruby also combined with Ava Kiely, Súin Cunningham and Maebh Rowe to take silver in the under 16 relay. Our under 9 girls team of Taylor O’Leary, Íde ní Lonáin , Mollaí ní Lonáin and Maddie Grant put in a sterling performance to finish second in the under 10 relay.

Aisling Hickey continues the walking tradition of the Costin family with a win in the girls under 13 race walking event. There were also podium finishes for Íde ní Lonáin (2nd in the 80m), Alex Whelan (2nd in the 300m) and Dylan O’Leary (3rd in the Shot). Darren Doherty just missed out in the under 15 100m finishing 4th in the final. We also had Shay Doherty and Liam Enright running well on the day. Well done to all our athletes who competed on the day.

Day 1 Waterford County Championships

With 35 athletes in action West Waterford had a very successful day at the county championships with many of our newer athletes winning their first county medals. Full report and photos in next weeks paper. Over the Easter holiday we had two very successful outings to the track in Clonmel with 34 taking part in week1 and 45 in week two. You could really see on Sunday at the championships how this experience made a huge difference to our younger athletes and to those competing in the technical events.

East Munster Girls Schools Championships on Wed April 30th

On Wednesday our athletes of secondary school age will compete in the East Munster schools championships in Templemore. There will be a full programme of events and our athletes will face stiff competition from the Tipperary schools. With just two athletes to qualify in the laned events and three in all other events it will be a tough task to qualify through to the 123.ie Munster Schools Championships.

County Development Day Saturday May 4th

There will be another county development day on Sat May 4th in the RSC in Waterford. This is open to athlete from 12 upwards who competed in this weeks championship or who have in the past competed at a Munster Championship. This will be an opportunity for those athletes to get a training session in on the track before Day two of the county championships on May 11th.
