Come Run With a Legend! John Treacy 10 Mile Classic and 5k Fun Run/Walk

West Waterford Athletics Club is delighted to be involved in organising the inaugural John Treacy 10 Mile Classic & 5k Fun Run which will take place in Villierstown on Sunday May 17th 2009. John Treacy is a name which is synonymous with the highest levels of athletic achievement over the course of an illustrious sporting career. He is almost always mentioned in the same breath as his native County Waterford and his picturesque home village of Villierstown in the scenic Dromana area of West Waterford.

This coming May 17th why not join with Waterford County Council, Waterford Sports Partnership, West Waterford AC, Waterford AC and John’s local community along with hundreds of running enthusiasts in celebrating John’s achievements by taking part in the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic and 5k Fun Run/Walk. It will also be a chance to visit this beautiful area of west County Waterford, to raise funds for John’s nominated charity Concern and to get out there and get fit in the process by either choosing to challenge yourself over the 10 mile course or to join family and friends along the route of the 5k fun run/walk.

This year sees the 30th anniversary of John’s famous IAAF World Cross Country Championship victory in Limerick in 1979 actually retaining the title he had captured the previous year in mud of Glasgow. It is also the 25th anniversary of that famous silver medal winning performance in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. A four time Olympian, who at one time held the Irish record for 3000m, 5000m, 10000m and the marathon, John won numerous races on the athletics calendar, including the Los Angeles Marathon, Dublin City Marathon, Great North Run, Gasparilla 15K Road Race and was a member of the Irish Team that won two Ekiden relays.

John is the CEO of the Irish Sports Council since its establishment in 1999. He is a member of the board of Sports Campus Ireland, Cardiovascular Policy Group, and a current board member of CONCERN worldwide.

Denis McCarthy, Director of Services, Community & Enterprise says that Waterford County Council is delighted to be part of an event which ‘not only honours such a wonderful athlete but will also show what this part of the county has to offer to visitors to the area’. Rosarie Kealy, Sports Co-ordinator with Waterford Sports Partnership is enthused about the inaugural running of what is sure to be a great sporting occasion and says that ‘it builds on the strong tradition of athletics in Waterford and the fantastic work being done by our local clubs day in day out.  This event is all about participation and getting active – all the family can take part – whether in the 5k walking, jogging or running or competing in the 10mile.’

The organisers are delighted to welcome Adidas on board as the main sponsors while the event is also supported by Failte Ireland.

Why not make a date for your diary for the John Treacy 10 Mile Classic or bring the whole family along and join in the fun of the 5k Fun Run/Walk. The event takes place on Sunday 17th May 2009 at 12:30 p.m. in Villerstown, Co. Waterford. Race HQ is Villierstown Hall where registration, changing, post race refreshments and prize ceremony will also take place. John’s community has an entire weekend of festivities planned to coincide with the event, details will be announced closer to the date.
