MINNIES FIT4LIFE RUNNING LEAGUE FOUR NIGHTS DOWN BUT FOUR MORE STILL TO GO!

Last Tuesday 19th May saw the popular Minnie’s Fit4Life running league reach the halfway stage. The first 4 nights of the league have exceeded our expectations in every way. Given that the weather this May seems to be the worst in years thankfully each Tuesday evening we have had no problems with dry bright evenings and this has helped to keep the numbers up. We are delighted to not only see so many people striving for fitness each week but what is really encouraging is the number of beginners in the 1 and 2 lap league who are making the effort to keep coming back each week even though they find it hard but they are determined to keep trying because they know it will get easier. They are seeing a reward for their efforts in their times which are decreasing each week and also many have moved from 1 to 2 laps and 2 to 3 etc. So congratulations to everyone who has run so far and to anyone who is thinking of giving it a go, come along Tuesday evening 6.45 to the Friary College and join the gang, you are more than welcome.

ONE LAP THE DUBS ARE TAKING OVER!

Pascal Proctor was to the fore again last Tuesday as he led home the 32 athletes who took on the 1 lap challenge in a time of 8.59. Pascal is using this league to improve his speed for the summer races and he is certainly achieving this goal. Michael Mc Carthy was in second position once again in 9.17. In third position this week we had a newcomer to the Fit4Life league Joan Navin (9.41) who is a very busy lady at the moment between cycling and running. Eleanor Howard was next through the finishing tunnel in 10.02 closely followed by Michael Phelan (10.24) who took another half minute from his week 3 time. Caroline Lenihan (10.50) will be delighted to drop under 11 minutes for the first time while newcomers Jane O Sullivan (10.52) and Grace Hillard (11.05) took it all in their stride. Pearl Veale worked hard to improve her time from 12.06 in week 3 to 11.37 in week 4 while well done also to Anita Lyons (11.58) who broke the 12-minute barrier this week.  Bernadette Murphy (12.45) was also nearly 1 ½ minutes faster than week 3 while her sister Mary Rose has also improved by the exact same margin since the start of the league. As always well done to everyone who ran the 1 lap league and you are half way there now so keep up the good work.

2 LAPS SHANE IS BACK ON TOP

Last week we told you about the popularity of the 2 lap league with 42 athletes taking on the 2.4 miles, well this week saw a record 47 participants in the 2 lap course with 7 running this distance for the first time. Once again young Shane Power led them home, fresh from a great run in the John Treacy 10 Mile race in Villierstown where he was part of the West Waterford A.C. team who took the team prize. Shane has been first home in 3 out of the 4 nights of this league and this week his time was 13.47. His teammate in Villierstown Philip Harty finished in exactly the same time with the junior prizewinner Ciarán Lane in 3rd position in 14.55. Liam Kavanagh (16.52) also had a fantastic run in the John Treacy 10 and he filled the 4th spot. Thomas Deane a newcomer to our leagues ran the 4 laps in week 3 but this week he was in fourth position in the 2.4 miles in 17.33.  Another newcomer Peter Fitzgerald (18.49) had no problem with the distance and the same applies to Lisa Mc Grath (19.34). In week 4 many runners broke personal barriers for the first time, Geraldine Barry (21.52) broke 22 minutes for the first time while Molly Byrne (22.49) conquered the 23-minute mark. Likewise Alison O Brien (24.25) had a personal battle with the 25 minute mark which she won convincingly on Tuesday evening last. Marie Kennedy (25.07) also won her personal fight with the 26-minute mark and in the process has now taken nearly 2 ½ minutes since the beginning of this league. Another man on a mission was Michael Burke (26.04) who took time in week 3 to run the 1 lap but was back in week 4 where he was faster by 1 minute and 4 seconds.  Well done to one and all.

3 LAPS CANTWELL CLAIMS TOP SPOT AGAIN

Gary Cantwell was once again in pole position in the 3-lap league in week 4, a position he has also filled on 3 out of the 4 nights. His time in week 4 was 22.42, which is great running for the 3.6 miles in the Friary. Yevgeniy Chizhikov has filled the number 2 spot on three occasions and took first position in week 2 and he was just 9 seconds behind in 22.51. Newcomers filled the next two positions; Trevor Hennessy was 3rd in 24.43 while Robert Mazinski was fourth in 27.07. The first lady home for 3 laps was Geraldine Heffernan (27.39) who had an excellent run in Waterford to Tramore recently and who will continue to improve over the summer. Tom Scanlon swapped over to the 3 laps and ran very well too in 28.55. Liam Fleming (brother of Jim) and Aoife Connors ran the league for the first time and it was no problem for them both with Liam running the 3.6 miles in 29.11 while Aoife clocked 29.40. While many runners on the night were a little down on their times due to their efforts in Villierstown Noel Mc Kenna had his best time of the league to date in 29.13, while Nikki was not to be outdone when she also had a p.b. of 33.14 likewise John Murray when he ran 31.04. Catriona O Brien showed no tiredness from Villierstown when she ran her fastest time for the league of 30.53, while Pearse Moloney (30.50) cracked the 31-minute barrier. Conor Blackwell who decided to join Brigid in the running game is also making improvements each week and ran his fastest time of 31.34 in week 4. Last Tuesday saw the highest number participating in the 3 lap distance when 26 took up the challenge, congratulations to you all.

4 LAPS SEAN MAKES IT FOUR FROM FOUR

Sean Stilwell was the third member of the successful West Waterford team in Villierstown and for the fourth week in a row he led the 4-lap contenders home but this time he recorded his fastest time of the league to date of 27.19. Declan Mc Grath was second on the night in 28.24 while Kevin Kenneally was next in 28.53. K.C.K. athlete John Behan had his first outing in the Minnie’s League this year and clocked an impressive 29.25 while Des Feeney was in 5th position in 30.08. Patrick Riordan recorded his fastest time of the league so far when he ran 30.35. As with the other distances we had some newcomers in the 4 lap league but they are no strangers to running they showed with Gary Collins recording 31.53 while Gary Mc Cormack got round in 32.21 and Jim Fleming recovering from injury clocked 36.02. As usual Corinna Walsh was first lady finisher in the 4-lap league this time she recorded 34.44 while Ann Whelan was second lady on the night in 36.46. Another to have a p.b. For the league was Pat Morrissey when he clocked 38.06 while Micheál O’ Chuirrin did likewise when he got round in 40.21. A total of 34 took on the 4.8-mile distance and well done to everyone.

LEAGUE TABLES

League tables are now on display each week at the league and if anyone has any questions please ask Tony or Ann. At this stage you need to have run on 2 occasions (in 1 distance) to record the minimum 6 nights, which is needed to appear on the league tables. If you run more than 6, your best 6 finishes will be taken into account. By this we mean if you finished 10th in the 2 lap league on week 1 you got 10 points for that night and so on. Least points are best and there is movement between the divisions. Don’t worry if you are in a lower division this is probably because you have ran every night to date and some of the people in the top divisions are there because they have only ran 2 or 3 nights.

THANK YOUS

Finally thank you once again to everyone participating in the league we couldn’t hold leagues without runners so you can all feel pleased with yourselves, as this is one of our most successful leagues to date. Thanks once again to St Augustine’s College for the use of their grounds and to the O’ Brien family for their continued sponsorship and support. To everyone who makes the league possible each week, well done and thanks to you all.

BEGINNER’S CORNER.

Pretty soon, we will have to come up with a new name for this section as we are well over three months into the programme. The goal at the outset was to build up to running 5 miles over the summer and this is one goal that will easily be achieved by all those following the programme. By now, many of you have a number of different routes for training which helps maintain the interest. We hope that you are all drinking plenty of water both before and after running in order to stay well hydrated. Another important aspect of running and training is to ensure that you eat as soon as possible after a run in order to aid and speed up recovery. Ideally you should combine both carbohydrates and protein in your post-training diet as both help to refuel and repair the muscles. Good sources of protein are fish, eggs, meat and nuts. The following programme is for the week beginning Monday June 1st. The Touraneena 5K is on the same night so there is always the option of taking part in that and using that as part of your training.
