GER WYLEY SPORTS/NIKE SUMMER SERIES.

17th ANNUAL MOONEYS PUB RAS NA RINNE.

RAIVIS ZAKIS POWERS HIS WAY TO VICTORY OVER CUNNIGAR CIRCUIT.

Despite the off shore strong breeze, good times were recorded for last Friday evening’s Mooney’s Bar sponsored Rás Na Rinne. Now in its 17th year the race saw 167 runners taking on the tough Cunnigar Circuit, The event was race number 6 in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike summer series 2009.This series has gone from strength to strength this year with unprecedented numbers taking part, which the club and its sponsors are delighted with. The race this year saw a home club winner in the men’s event and a midlands winner in the Ladies section. Missing from the line up in 2008 Raivis Zakis was installed the red hot favourite to take the title this year a title he had won once before. Raivis who is currently in terrific shape following his 2.24 personal best marathon run in Paris recently, Despite the strong breeze on the return leg of the Cunnigar, he had a real crack at the course record of 29.14,Taking up the race from the gun the Latvian national power his way down the road section and onto the Cunnigar, At the four mile mark with just under two to go he was still on for that record, but when turning into that stiff breeze on the return Cunnigar journey he slowed a little, however he gave it his all back on the final half mile road section and at the tape was clocked at 29.37 which was outside the course record but it has to be said a brave attempt non the less considering it was all a one man effort, This time was one of the fastest ever recorded for this race and one feels with a running companion on the night it might have been a different story line,Raivis is now well capable of taking that record on another day maybe. The Ras Na Rinne record is held by William Harty at 29.14.Club mate of Raivis, Sean Stilwell finished 2nd on the night and like Raivis he held that position from gun to tape, Sean’s time of 31.52 was his fastest time ever recorded in this event, so well done on a very strong run from the Ardmore man,Winner of the race in 2008 Ferdia O’hAodha ran a time of 32.03 this year to claim 3rd place. One of our visitors from Wexford the very well known Tommy McElwaine took the over 40 section in a time of 32.33.Tommy a very well known athlete around Wexford and is a man who raise’s huge monies for local charities and just last weekend did a 20 mile run in aid of one such charity, raising a whopping 20.000 Euro for his effort, so well done to Tommy. Noel Curtin Youghal AC was the winner of our over 45 category with another top drawer run 33.40.Noel is one of the countries finest in his category and is a frequent and welcome visitor to our races, The over 50 race was won by Larry Lacey St. Joseph’s Kilkenny and again a fine time of 34.09 from Larry, is superb running. Larry is very rarely beaten in the over 50 category. Joe Gough’s time of 34.38 saw him finish 16th overall in the race and that’s why his a European and World medallist, well-done Joe on another excellent run. The final individual prize was the Junior and this went to West Waterford’s Ciarán Lane with a time of 35.52,Ciaran is developing into a fine athlete and is training regularly under the watchful eye of Philip Harty and is one of a big group of runner’s currently training with Philip where all are making steady progress in the sport. Keep up the good work boy’s.

PAULINE LAMBE EQUALS COURSE RECORD.

For the fourth Ger Wyley /Nike summer series race in a row Tullamore’s Pauline Lambe made her intentions well known that she like Raivis in the men’s race was here to have a crack at yet another of our Ladies course record’s, four of which she has already broken this year to date. The record in the Rás Na Rinne event is held by Lorri Stitch an American visitor to the race some years ago who set a very good Ladies standard of 35.14, From the gun Pauline took a commanding lead over her nearest rival last year’s winner Corinna Walsh. Pauline was indeed still just inside the record with under a mile to go as she left the Cunnigar section behind her. The clock was ticking as she came into view of the finish line and it appeared that she had indeed broke the record by a single second but when the official times were printed she had missed out by the narrowest of margins 100 of a second and was officially recorded as 35.14 which equalled the old standard. Pauline finished 25th overall in the race and she this year has stamped her name on many of the clubs events with some terrific wins and times recorded. The winner in 2008 West Waterford’s Corinna Walsh was well clear in second place with a time of 37.08 which was just outside her winning time of last year Corinna also an athlete in terrific form this year is running some of her best road races ever and with the influx of very good Female athletes on the scene presently is mixing it with the countries very best. Third home Friday evening in the Ladies race was St. Sennan’s Cait Caulfield in 38.02. Cait will be well pleased with this run having moved up one place from her finishing place in 2008.Winner of the over 35 section in Clashmore the previous week Susan Dullaghan repeated her wining performance here with a time of 39.53 good running from the city Woman who is very new to the sport and making very good progress. Anne Whelan took the over 40 section in 43.45 also repeating her win in this section from 2008,Claire Fowler’s time of 41.54 was good enough for her to take a deserving win in the over 45’s and club mate at Waterford AC Anne Fitzgerald also had a very good run over the sand of the Cunnigar to take the over 50 section with a time of 40.17.Ann also won this category in 2008.One of our most frequent visitors to West Waterford events Tipperary’s Hillary Collins Won the over 55 section in a time of 46.33.Our final Ladies category winner was in the Junior Ladies and here West Waterford ‘s Edel Roche claimed yet another Junior prize clocking a time of 47.41.

MINNIES FIT4LIFE RUNNING LEAGUE

GREAT RUNNING ON THE FINAL NIGHT

The eight and final round of the Minnies Fit4Life Running League took place once again at the Friary College Tuesday evening last and again it did not disappoint as well over 100 runners took to the fields of St Augustine’s and ran their chosen distance with great enthusiasm and indeed at this stage most with a smile on their face. Just to let you know over the course of this league we have been telling you that the numbers participating have exceeded our expectations, well here are the final figures of numbers taking part. 70 people have tried the 1 Lap while the 2 Lap was always the most popular with 91 different athletes taking part. In the 3 Lap we had 46 trying this distance and in the 4 Lap league 55 athletes competed. That’s a gives a total of 262 who took part over the course of the 8 weeks which is tremendous. Just a reminder that we take a break for a week and the Amber Petroleum Fit4Life league will commence on Tuesday evening June 30 at 7pm, once again at the Friary College grounds.

1 LAP
ANDREW SETS FASTEST TIME ONCE MORE

Last week we brought you the news that Pascal Proctor had taken the 1 lap by storm and shaved a second off the fastest time for that distance this year well little did we know that Andrew Burke who had held that record, would come back on the last night and steal back the record from Pascal and this he did in some style by setting a time of 7.53 and became the first athlete to break 8 minutes for the 1 lap this year. Well-done Andrew. Paul Gray in his second week of running the 1 Lap was second home in an impressive 8.28 while in third place was Pascal Proctor in 8.47. The ever consistent Michael Mc Carthy filled 4th spot while, once again Jane O Sullivan was first lady home in 9.22 which was 1 second faster than her previous best. Last week Eleanor Howard (9.29) broke 10 minutes for the first time and in week 8 she did likewise taking a further 7 seconds off. Danielle Lyons will be delighted to take a further 11 seconds off her week 7 time running 10.30 on the night while Louise Conroy who never missed a night of this league ran 10.38 on the final night which was just 1 second off her fastest time. Another member of the Lyons family, Jessica, this week running for her first time in the league ran an impressive 10.43 while Pearl Veale managed to equal her fastest time to date of 10.56, which she set in week 7. Sheila (11.24) and Niamh Budds (11.50) kept the best for last as they set 2 new p.b’s for themselves in week 8, as did Bernadette Murphy (12.05) and also Michael Burke (13.46). Mary Rose Drummy also recorded a p.b. in week 8 as she took 11 seconds from her previous best, running 14.34 on the final night. As always we say well done to everyone who took part on any and all nights of the 1 Lap league and we hope you enjoyed it.

2 LAPS
SHANE LEADS THEM HOME ONCE AGAIN

Shane Power has really dominated the 2 Lap distance in this league and indeed has finished first on 6 occasions and he did this once again last Tuesday evening in a time of 16.07 despite carrying a leg injury. In second place and recording the exact same time was Liam Kavanagh while on this occasion Geraldine Heffernan took on the 2 4 miles instead of her usual 3 laps and set a fast time of 17.40. Scott Lyons was next in 18.25, which was a further 20 seconds improvement on his week 7 time. Kieran Coleman showed once again his potential when in only his second week he recorded 18.38 for the 2 laps. Marion Troy in week 8 went on to record her fastest time to date for this league of 19.35 while Margaret Power did likewise in 19.38.Not to be outdone Richard Griffin was next through the finish line and he will be delighted to see 19.39 on the clock as this was also a p.b. for Richard. Declan Hayes will likewise be happy with his fastest time to date of 19.48 as its always nice to have a p.b. on the final night of a league. Angelica Bradatan (19.51) was another to achieve this feat breaking 20 minutes for the first time. Last week we told you Helen O Brien might break the 21 minute barrier this time around and this she duly did on Tuesday recording 20.45 and also that Molly Byrne might do the same, well Molly did not disappoint either and she ran 20.51 on the final night. Well done Helen and Molly. Ann Massey was only 5 seconds out in 22.05 while Aisling Hourigan (22.09) also set her best time to date. Michelle Fitzgerald gave it her all too and was rewarded by breaking the 23 minute barrier for the first time recording 22.52 with Noelle Quann (23.09) and Marie Kennedy just behind in 23.15 also with a p.b’s. Rita Cronolly was not to be outdone either and she will be delighted to run her fastest time to date of 23.23 as will Siobhain Mc Grath who came back in week 8 to record a p.b. of 23.50 breaking 24 minutes for the first time. Cordelia Burke did likewise running 25.34 on her final night while it was great to see Marion Keane (24.19) and Ann Wright (24.20) back in action once again. Well done to everyone who ran the 2.4 miles and hope to see you all on Tuesday 30th.

3 LAPS
ALAN DOES THE BUSINESS

In the 3-lap league this week Alan Lyons led the runners home in a time of 22.45. This was Alan’s second time to run the 3-lap league having previously competed over the 4-lap distance. Following Alan home on the night was Trevor Hennessy who previously had a p.b. of 22.38 for the 3.6 miles and this week he completed the course in 23.40. Filling 3rd spot on the night was Peter Fitzgerald in 25.26. On this occasion Peter switched up from the 2 laps to add in the extra lap and made the switch with ease. Noel Mc Kenna broke 28 minutes in week 7 for the first time, well, he did it again in week 8 taking a further 4 seconds off in the process running 27.11. It was a similar story for George Tutty as he ran every night and broke 28 minutes in week 7 for the first time but when he did it once he found it easier in week 8 and took a further 30 seconds off running 27.28. Michael Deegan too has impressed over this league with his patience and steady improvements each week and on the final night he too set his fastest time of 28.02 while Brendan Kent (28.34) and Richie Power (28.43) were next through the finishing tunnel. Conor Blackwell is another making great strides in this league and he also had a p.b. on the final night of 29.20 while John Murray (29.59) who has also ran every night of the league was rewarded for his effort and dedication on the final night when he broke 30 minutes for the first time. Michelle O Connell who also had a p.b. in week 7 took a further 46 seconds off and broke 33 minutes for the first time recording 32.59. Well done to all who took part in the 3 lap league over the course of the 8 weeks.

4 LAPS
SEAN MAKES IT 8 FROM 8

The outstanding feature of week 8 in the 4 lap league was the number of athletes recording p.b.’s for the final night. Of the 33 runners on the night 15 had their fastest time to date. Sean Stilwell recorded his eight first place finish as he led the runner’s home in a time of 27.44. The stylish Kevin Kenneally kept the best for last, as he had the first of the p.b’s on the night when he ran 27.51. Another stylish athlete John Behan, who has also competed over the 2 and 3 lap circuit had a p.b. for the 4.8 miles of exactly 28 minutes on the final night. Michael Dunford had a fine p.b. of 29.09 in week 7, well he cut it fine but he shaved a further second off in week 8 while Ken O Donnell (29.22) says the long runs are kicking in helping him to a second sub 30 minute finish in a row. Gary Collins will also be delighted to go very close to that 30 minute mark as he finished in 30.28, another p.b. Another keeping the best for last was Tom Leahy when in running 31.12 he had a p.b. by some 30 seconds. The next to record their fastest time was Tom Moroney as he is back to his form of 2008 running 32.46 while Mark Cliffe who came so close to breaking 34 minutes last week did so with ease this week running 33.43. Gerry O Connor was hot on Mark’s heels and he bagged himself a p.b. also of 34.08 while the Ring contingent of Pat Morrissey and Josie Ui Chuirrin were not to be denied as they also had their fastest times to date recording 36.23 and 36.29 respectively. Angeline Drennan too was not to be denied as she quickened considerably over the final lap to break 38 minutes for the first time in this league running 37.47. In 38.52 Liz Nyhan also had a great run for the final night and she will be delighted with her efforts while Micheal O Chuirrin also will be thrilled to take 33 seconds off his best time to date recording 39.02. The final p.b. Of the night goes to Liam Sandford who was very happy to record a time of 42.21 for the final round, which was over 1 ½ minutes faster than his best time.

AMBER PETROLEUM FIT4LIFE RUNNING LEAGUE

The eagerly awaited Amber Petroleum running league begins next Tuesday night, June 30th at 7 pm in the grounds of the Friary College by kind permission. Formerly known as the TQS league, this year we welcome on board a new sponsor in the guise of Pat Keane of Amber Petroleum Garage. A supporter of many of our races and events along with his wife Marian, they came on board as sponsors this year and their kind gesture is very much appreciated by all at the club. Having recently set up business on the Youghal Road and supporting local businesses wherever possible, they have extended their local support by sponsoring local clubs and this hugely popular league. It’s a league that caters for all types of runners and non-runners. Although at West Waterford, the emphasis is on participation and not winning, this league is open to all in that the winner is the person that runs closest to their predicted time. In many cases, it’s the person with the slowest time on the night that is deemed the winner and it’s really entertaining each night. Why not come along next Tuesday night and see for yourself. The clock starts at 45 minutes and works backwards and when the clock reaches the time you think you will complete the distance in, you start running. There is a choice of 1, 2, 3 or 4 laps. Obviously we would encourage newcomers to start with one lap and see how you get on. All those that took part in the recent Minnie’s League are also encouraged to keep up the momentum and take part in the Amber Petroleum League; it’s a great and fun way to stay fit. It’s an 8-week league, held on eight consecutive Tuesday nights, beginning on June 30 and finishing on August 18. It’s just €2 per night. Just come along to the Friary, you’ll spot the club van and we will be there to answer any questions you may have and we’ll also provide advice and encouragement. It’s a league that gets new faces each year and it’s ideally suited for beginners so we look forward to seeing you on Tuesday night. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pat Keane and his family for their most generous sponsorship and support of this league. We urge our members to support Pat’s new venture and indeed to support all our sponsors when appropriate.
