First Munster Title for Kate Veale
The first session of the Munster Club Championships were held in glorious sunshine in Castleisland last weekend. A small number of our young athletes made the journey to compete in a very competitive event. Kate Veale had a very successful day taking gold in the girls under 14 walk. This is Kate’s first year in race walking and she has taken to it like the proverbial duck to water. On Sunday she was a clear winner and her winning time of  11m 23s came very close to the record. We should hear a lot more about Kate in the years to come.
Our second medal winner on the day was Ciara Scanlan who finished 3rd in the under 14 Discus. The standard was very high in this event with the first three over 20mts.

A number of our athletes qualified for the finals of their events including Ronan O’Neill in the Shot and Discus and Chloe Walsh in the Long Jump where she jumped 4m 15. In the High Jump Leanne Herlihy was just outside the medals in 4th place. Leanne jumped the same height as the second and third placed athletes but the places were decided on faults. Kate Hickey finished 5th in the under 13 Shot. Ciara Scanlan finished 8th in the under 14 Shot with Siobhan Nugent just behind her in 9th. David Early was 8th in a very fast 1500m as were Michael Coleman and Tholm Reddy in the under 12 600m team event. Cian Ryan was running very well in the under 13 600m and looked to be heading for a medal but a stumble on the second lap saw him lose out. Maggie O’ Neill competed in the under 13 Long Jump and jumped 3m 43, while Rachael Phelan jumped 3m 60 in the under 14 event.

Club Championships a big Success
The first round of the club championships last Friday was a big success with almost sixty athletes taking part. Last week it was the sprint event with everyone taking part and gaining points. Tony is busy sorting out the scores and they will be on display on the big board at training on Wednesday. Next Friday it’s Long Jump for girls in all ages and Ball Throw for boys under 9 and 11 and Shot for boys under 13, 15 and over 15. We hope that anyone who missed round one will be there on Friday next.
