WEST WATERFORD ATHLETIC CLUB JUVENILE NOTES

 Championship Records for Zoe Scanlon, Lisa and Thomas Houlihan

The first section of the Munster Club Championships for under 15’s to 19’s was held in Cork on Sunday last.  As expected the standard was high across all events but West Waterford’s athletes proved they are as good as the best in Munster winning four gold, four silver and four bronze medal as well as reaching the final eight in many events.  The first gold medal was won by Lisa Houlihan , she was a convincing winner in her heatof the 80m Hurdles and had a superb run in the final to win in a time of 12.49 which was a new championship best performance.   At the same time West Waterford athletes were dominating the pole vault event. Thomas Houlihan won the under 16 event with a new championship best performance of 2m 80, Michael Devine second and Joe Conway third made it a clean sweep for West Waterford. In the under 17 Pole Vault Patrick Palmer was the winner.  In the girls events Ruth Fennell won silver under 16 as did Aisling Fennell in the under 18 and Emma Dunne won bronze in the same event.

West Waterford athletes continued their winning form in the throwing events.  Zoe Scanlan pulled out all the stops in the final round of the under 15 Discus to win the gold medal in a championship best performance of 34m52 later in the afternoon she won a bronze medal in the shot.  Louise O’Neill had a personal best throw of 36m74 to take second in the Hammer under17.  The final medal of the day was won by Mark Shalloe who finished third in a very competitive under 18 1500m. In the boys under 15 Michael Tutty reached the final of the 200m. Niamh Collins finished 5th in the under 15 Discus as did her cousin Claire in the under 16 high Jump where she cleared a height of 1m40.  In the same event Rebecca Maher cleared 1m35 for the first time.
Flag Day

International Selection for Lisa Houlihan Thomas Houlihan and Zoe Scanlan

At the Kit Kat Tailteann Inter Provincial Championships in Tullamore on Saturday three more west Waterford athletes gained international selection.  Both Lisa Houlihan and Zoe Scanlan moved up an age group to compete at intermediate level but undaunted by the older opposition Lisa went on to win the pole vault with a jump of 2m70. Zoe threw the heavier discus 28m 65 to take the bronze medal.  Thomas Houlihan finished second in the pole vault. All three were selected to represent the Irish Schools at the Schools International, which will be held in Newport Wales on Sat July 21st.  The other west Waterford medal winner on the day was Patrick Palmer who was third in the pole vault.

Club Championship Final   

The final of the club championship will be run on Friday next when everyone will compete in a distance event.  Prizes will be presented at the end of the night.
