Juvenile Notes, 3rd March 2008

Training Starts on Wednesday March 5th
Its time for training for the track and field season to start so we will be back in action on Wednesday 5th March at 6.00p.m. at the Friary.  We are starting back a little earlier this year, as we want to be up and running before the schools go on holidays for Easter.  We look forward to seeing all our members who competed in the cross-country and track and field last year back in action again.  New members are always welcome so see you all on Wednesday and Friday 6.00p.m. at the Friary.

Success for West Waterford Athletes at Indoor Championships
We had a small number of athletes in action at the Munster Indoor Championships, which were held in Nenagh over the last two weekends.  Kate Veale continued to dominate the walk in her age group with a clear win in the girls under 15 1,000m in a very fast time of 4.41.  Joe Conway was also among the medal winners when he finished 3rd in the under 17 2000m walk in a time of 8.02.  Lisa Houlihan was 4th in the under 15 Long Jump while Kate Hickey improved her performance in the shot by almost a metre when finishing 4th in the under 14 Shot.  All four athletes have qualified for the All Ireland Finals.

West Waterford Athletes Head for Kit Kat All-Ireland Schools
On Saturday next the 8th of March the Kit Kat All Ireland Schools Cross-Country Championships take place at Dartfield Equestrian Centre Loughrae Co. Galway. West Waterford athletes will be competing with their local schools. Kate Veale will compete for St. Augustines in the junior girls race at 12noon.  Kate showed great form in the Munster event and was only caught in the run in to the finish so should be well in contention in this event.  In the Intermediate girls the Ardscoil will field a full team made up of Edel Roche, Rebecca Maher, Claire Collins, Clodagh Gallagher, Kate Kennedy and Colleen Whelan.  They will face strong opposition from the Leinster schools and as all are under age for this event again next year they did well to qualify to represent Munster.  Joe Conway will represent St. Augustines in the Intermediate boys as will Rory Moloney in the Senior Boys. Both have made great strides in cross-country running this year.  The Senior girls will see West Waterford’s Elma Nugent and Jenny Hurley in action representing the Ardscoil and both will be hoping to finish in the top twenty in what will be a very fast and competitive race. Also in action will be Colin Dunford competing for the C.B.S. in his first All-Ireland.  Best of luck to all our athletes and also to Padraig Healy who competes on the same day in the Inter-Varsity Championships.
